Mirena Coil

I had a mirena coil fitted on the 26 Jan this year, and I am still bleeding, very lightly, but nevertheless still bleeding. Can anyone out there give me a clue as to when this might stop ?

I was prescribed some medication from my doctor in the 1st couple of weeks which slowed the bleeding down, and have been checked for infection which came back clear.

I was looking forward to having this coil in as I have suffered from heavy periods, but its now beginning to get on my nerves, and is playing havoc with my sex life.

Thank you

Sue

Unfortunately my bleeding has never stopped (not as heavy or flooding any more but having a period for 12-14 days every 5-7 days)and I have had the Mirena coil for 13 months now and have put on 20kgs even though I have not increased my food intake and am still exercising. My stomach has that pregnant look constantly. I am seriously considering having the coil removed.

hi
just for your info i had the mirena fitted 17 months ago and never stopped bleeding.... although it was very light.
every time i went to the drs he said it was still settling in...
but pls be very aware of all the side effects that come with the mirena.... i put on 3 stone bad skin greasy hair bloated all the time looking like i was 5 months pregnant sore and swollen boobs, and the mood swings and depression were unbelievable...plus lots more...
every time i told the dr about what i was experiancing he stated it had nothing to do with the mirena !!!
i got very desperate as i thought it was all in my head.... i looked it up on the net and found lots of other women all going through the same thing !!!
look up mirena and weight gain and you will see what i mean....
i had mine removed last monday and in 6 days i have lost 5lbs !! and feel soooo much better.
so please be very careful im not trying to scare you but this coil does not work for everyone.... just keep an eye on all the side effects and dont take no for an answer from your gp....
do lots of research and you will see what i mean...
good luck and i hope it works for you

Thank you Deb-Lou, I will have to see how things go, how soon did you notice the symptoms ? I dont think I have gained any weight or have any skin problems with it - its just the continuous bleeding that is driving me mad.

Thanks

As a long term Mirena user, 2 coils over 10 years, I thought I'd share my experienes with you.

I had my first Mirena fitted in January 1996. I was one of 5 women who were "Guinea Pigs" for our surgery. I had slight bleeding on and off for the first few months and then nothing. No periods for nearly 5 years. No other side effects. No weight gain, spots, nothing - it worked brilliantly.

This was removed in March 2001 and a new Mirena inserted at the same time. The removal and insertion second time roud was absolute agony. Very painful. However, I had no bleeding other than on the day it was fitted - again no periods for five years. I did put on weight in the 3rd year and get spots and have greasy hair. As I worked out a lot the weight gain was not something I was bothered about. The spots were! I did put the weight gain down to my age (40)

Today I went in for removal and a new Mirena. This time the pain was worse the removal was agony and I just could not have a new one fitted.

Apparently after 10 years with no periods my cervix has closed so tightly that it is now very difficult to fit a coil, especially the Mirena as it is bigger than other coils. I now have to consider having a couple of normal cycles in order to have another fitted.

I will not be having the third one fitted - not because it does not work for me but because fitting is just too painful. It is such a shame - I found the Mirena very effective and for me, (it's different for everyone) I found the side-effects the same as if I was on the contraceptive pill.

I have had positive experiences with the Mirena, apart from the fitting. Today feel like I have lost an old friend!

I got the mirena coil put in last november and since then i have had a phantom pregnancy(when you get all the symptoms of being pregnant but you aren't) after that which was around december i starting bleeding and still haven't stopped, and i have had 3 infections in my womb and my ovaries. I also got depression because i couldn't control my hormones. I am getting it removed asap before it does some severe damage to my insides. My advice to every woman is don't get it in!!!! I haven't been able to enjoy sex since. It really is not worth the it!!! I can't find a suitable contraception at all has anyone got advice on what to go for next. I have tried the imlanon and it caused me problems, i fell pregnant on the pill and there is a risk of breast cancer and brittle bones with the injection. Idon't know what to try now.

I had my mirena fitted 2 days before you on the 24 January for painful and exhausting periods and my bleeding has just stopped in the last 2 days- so hopefully you won't have to wait too much longer.Like you it was light but a nuisance all the same. I went to get the strings checked yesterday after 5 weeks and all was fine. My doctor was concerned as I had an awful lot of cramps following insertion but as I had a laparascopy at the time he thought it was mainly post op as there were problems opening my cervix although if you are cramping I would advice you to go and see your GP.

I also felt like getting it out in the first few weeks but I am feeling more positive now. I haven't had the terrible drop that I got wih my period so my energy levels have increased a bit. Its still early days and I do worry in case there is weight gain but will bear with it and see how things go. As I bled for 6 weeks I haven't been able to tell if I was having a period or not so I am interested to see how this turns out. over the next few months.

Good luck

I have had a Mirena coil now for 6 years (replaced once) the first time I had it fitted I bled for nearly 9 months and was totally fed up but miracuously after that it stopped and had no bleeding hardly until I had it replaced 4 years later. My suggestion would be, stick with it but if bleeding continues then give up on it!!! Its the best thing I ever did.

Oh my goodness, first time on this site and the reason I was looking was because my Mirena coil decided to disembark itself last night??? Has that happened to anyone else? Saying that, reading info alot of symptoms I have had for months now appear to maybe caused by the Mirena!!! I now suffer from IBS, I have gained weight, I suffer with constipation, constant backache where I have to get up in the mornings just to get it relieved, bloatness (apologies for spelling) my mood swings are horrendous!!! Could this loss of coil be a good thing!!!! I am beginning to believe so now!!! Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Up until last night I have always said how good the Mirena is, now I have my doubts and hopes that I may feel better soon!

hello everyone , who this may concern ..five years ago after having numerous so called 'womans problems ' ie : heavy bleading , painful periods , mood swings etc , i was advised to have a mirena coil fitted , apperently to seetle may eratic hormones , at the time i was 39 , i had aleady been sterilised , so it was not for contraceptive reasons.
i must add i also have underactive thyriod , something what has past down the family .

Any way within past five years may weight has increased , a stone a year , i have been on diets ect , gone swiming and to gym .

My bra size has gone from a 38c to 40dd , my waist has increased by 6 inches .

and i have constantly felt , congested/bloated . Excess hair growth in parts of my body , what didnt have them before.

Well 4 mths ago , my gp got me appt to a consultant and was diagnosed of having POCS , i have been on metformin for past 4mths and i have lost 1.5 stone , but i still had the congested feeling around my middle , i then requested the coil to be removed , little did i know , that was a problem too , the strings could be found . A scan should it was still there , but maybe in bedded , so was admitted as day case , to remove it under general anesthetic .This took place on 10th feb , this year and i didnt get a bleed till 10th march , it has been heavy , painfull alot of the time , but i do not feel bloated or congested round my middle area and my boobs feel so much lighter already. I have stopped bleading now , well i think i have and my jeans feel looser , it maybe in mind , but time will tell . All i can say is i feel , better than i did 6weeks ago , strange that ?

While i have been on metformin for PCOS , my weight lose has been 2lb a month , so if this increases , that will be down to coil removal , i must add i am not eating different or excercising .

I will keep you informed [Smiler]

Hi peeps,
Wish i had seen this site before having it done mind you went in to have a pollop removed and a d&c. While having my consultation with the surgeon she asked me if i'd concidered having the mirena fitted as i'm on the road to a hysterectomy in approx 2 years time "and we don't want that do we?" Looking back at it now i was kind of bombarded with this and i should of gone with my instincts and said no but it was the promise of no periods, no weight gain and no hysterectomy that i said yes.
Had the horrid thing taken out friday the 10th of March 4 days ago, best thing i've done in ages [Big Grin](seeing as my sex drive went out the window when it was inserted 8 months ago)[Frowner]. i've put on nearly a stone in those 8 months, had terrible stomach cramps, had smelly [V]light periods ever since(sorry girls but feel i need to tell the truth),mood swings and heavy legs, skins been ok tho.
One day after its removal i've come on a little heavy but ok,my tummies not so bloated and i've lost 2lbs without trying [Big Grin]
Hubbys trying to get me some 5-htp he's worried about the 10 day crash but i feel sooooo good and positive now i'm sure i will be ok.[Big Grin]

Hi Again,

Been a month since removal - apart from mood crash about 10 days later. No problem. As soon as it was removed I started taking Agnus Castus a natural hormone replacement - available from health food shops been around since the 4th century! It helps to regulate your cycle. I had the coil removed on the Wednesday 8th and took the pill until the Sunday and stopped. Exactly 28 days later my period arrived with no problems or cramping.

I was very surprised as it has been 10 years since I had a period so the Agnus Castus, I feel, must have worked.

I haven't lost any weight since it's removal and my boobs are less swollen (so now look smaller).

Tiger
