Hi Ladies I thought I would give an update on my mirena removal. I had the 'thing' out on the 11th May after having it in for three months, I had no bleeding the next day and for nine days after that I bled, sometimes very light or brown coloured blood and a couple of days heavy ish, then nothing for three days then heavy for a couple of days followed by brownish blood and heavy-ish for another nine or so days. So far I have had nothing for the last fifteen days so hoping that things are beginning to return to normal. I have had a few headaches and neck and shoulders really hurting for a few days, some discharge but thanks to the wondeful person on this forum who had recommended HTP-5 for post removal I say THANK YOU because I haven't experienced a 'crash' just a bit tired. I hope this helps any other 'sufferer'. Please keep posting your post removal stories they all help.

I had my Mirena removed 2 weeks and 2 days ago and I am still bleeding! I had it inserted in January and bled up until I had it removed. The doctor was reluctant to take it out, she acted like this was a 1 in a million type of deal. For three months before I had it out, she put me on the pill to try to curtail the bleeding, which did slow it down, but I had a lot of break through bleeding...so I would have to double up. My weight around my belly and my hips drastically increased. I am so reluctant to be intimate with my fella because I feel disgusting because of the weight and the constant spotting/bleeding. I feel like I could just cry. The doctor said I should wait another week or so before they would do anything different. Isn't bleeding since January enough time...I'm so frustrated. The doctor who I've gone to for years seemed to take it out begrudgingly and with a bit of an attitude that I've never seen before. She quipped, "Ok, let's get it out...don't go around telling everyone how much you hate the Mirena." WHAT!?! That ticked me off...not only do I hate the Mirena's effects on me personally, I'm offended by how she is treating me. I'm not a hypochondriac, I'm a professional, even tempered woman.
Seriously, how much longer will this bleeding last? What can make it stop? I'm already pumping 2-3 birth control pills a day to get it to stop...nothing is working!!!

Hi I had my mirena removed on Thursday after having it for 3 1/2 months. My Dr was very reluctant saying I'd not given it enough time to settle in, and what a shame it was and general guilt trip but after reading things on this forum I had to get it removed. I wish I'd never got it in the first place and just gone back on the pill. I might have actually lost some of the baby weight by now, I've never had trouble losing weight on the pill before and lost a stone in 6 weeks after my 1st child which was at the time of going back on the pill.
Anyway I didn't have it long enough to gain much weight, just a couple of lbs but I was still 2 stone overweight from having my 2nd child and despite exercising 4/5 times a week and doing weight watchers I wasn't losing any weight and was so disheartened and depressed. I was also very bloated, snappy and bad tempered, greasy hair, bad oily skin etc.
I'm back on the pill and hoping I can lose the weight now. I am very hormonal since removal and feel shattered all the time. I started to bleed heavily last night and its almost stopped now??? I guess from what I've read it might stop and start a bit for a while.
Hoping I might feel better though, I was expecting to feel better straight away from what some have said but apart from initially feeling liberated at having it removed I'm feeling worse than ever. Taking flaxseed to try to speed up my metabolism and starflower to try and control my hormones. There has been talk of taking another supplement post removal. HTP-5 something??? what is it and where can I get it>
Thanks

Hi. I just found this forum trying to get a question answered, and now I have several. I had the mirena removed Thursday, 2 days over 5 years. I am now cramping/bleeding like a period but I don't know if I am HAVING one or just "recovering". I always considered the Mirena to be THE BEST BC EVER!, until now... I got the Mirena 6/04. In 8/06, the USAF moved us from my home in MO to FL. IUn 11/07, I lost my Mom to a swift cancer, then my little sister got breast cancer 03/08. My Dad's Mom passed 10/08. My Mom's Mom passed in last month... And I've been in court over custody for a year ow/my eldest. Also, (yes, there's more), we have 2 sons (1 his, 1 mine) w/ADHD, and my daughter has ADD. There are 4 of our 5 children living with us, ages 5,8,13, and 16. And my husband is preparing for his 3rd non-stateside TDY assignment this year, his final before retirement, hopefully. Now, there;s been a lot of stress, worry, anger, and anxiety. I've been tired, sad, raving ticked, teary, and laid in bed until I HAD to get up some days. I am anxious, I am depressed, I am overwhelmed. Sometimes, my mood swings are pretty drastic. I thought all the major life-changing events had been doing a major number on me. I began seeing a therapist because I am so overwhelmed. And foggy headed? I've always been a wee bit flaky, but have really begun to feel like an idiot the past couple years. I lose complete converstions and get the strangest looks from the kids and the hubby sometimes. Could the mood swings, hissy fits, and air-headed lags be exacerbated by Mirena? I've tried medication, but none have helped noticeably. I don't really gain weight because I exercize regularly, but it has definitely started to center in my hips and thighs (and NOT in my Butt, sigh). As for the sex, my libido is SO MUCH HIGHER than Hubby (I'm 36, he's 39). I want it several times a week, it's not an issue at all. I experienced NO breast pain while on the Mirena that I can recall, but definitely have it NOW! OW! I had no periods then, but started bleeding Friday afternoon a little, and am now bleeding A LOT, with LOTS of Cramps. I told my GP I had a Mirena when I moved here. It hasn't come up when I talked to him regarding depression or anxiety. Should I? How long does it take to start feeing normal, or at least, happier if Mirena was part of the issue? And if I am bleeding now, does that represent a period? My husband deploys right after the time I would be ovulating if this is a period, and I am curious if I could get pregnant at that time. We have no children together and have decided to let nature run it's course... Thank You for any input or advice.
A day looking down at the daisies is always better than one looking up...

Hi all Great to share experiences with you. When I checked out the Mirena website there is no help on side effects at all! I've had my Mirena removed about a month ago after having it for 2 years. The lighter periods were great but I felt very tense & anxious at certain times in the month & got snappy with the kids. I feel pretty crap since removal as have had period for 3 weeks! feel drained & down. I hope my body retrieves my normal menstrual cycle soon. Does anyone recommend a supplement to help restore normal cycle & end my never ending period! thanks

Hi ladies, Just writing with an update on how things are going after Mirena. I had mine removed June 2, so it's three weeks ago. At first I felt so good, increased energy, higher sex drive, no pain in my boobs and a little weight loss. This last week hasn't been the best as I'm very emotional. It's got to be the crash, but I've been careful about taking vitamins and mood relaxers so I'm feeling let down they haven't worked. Been doing a lot of crying and can't seem to stop once I get started... it's very annoying because I don't really have anything to cry about. I am hoping this passes in the next day or so. Aside from my mood not being the greatest, I feel pretty good. I'm continuing to lose the water weight and bloated areas around my belly and can even fit into my pre-Mirena jeans again (although I have a ways to go to make them look good). I have been watching what I eat and doing some light exercise. Going to ramp that up a lot as my thigh and hip weight isn't as easy to shed, however. It's stuck and doesn't seem to want to shift or go away... but I suppose it has only been three weeks. Have got a deadline of July 31 (sister's wedding) and a bridesmaid dress to fit into by then... fingers x. Good luck to everyone else! xx Stace in lovely Sydney

Feeling good. My breasts are a lot more their old managable size (couldnt bring myself to buy bigger bras so just squeezed breasts into old ones until it looked like I had four!) Bleeding is still coming and going, had heavy, sludgy couple of days last week. Had a little crash moment Sunday (locked hubbie out of house for 10 mins while I calmed down) and a weepy day last week but other than that general mood is on the up and up. Weight is slowly sliding off but has anyone elses skin suffered? It looked lovely and fresh first week but have broken out which is unlike me.
Will feel happy when Ive got a couple of "normal" hormone free cycles behind me so I can know what my "normal" is without chemical intervention. Cheeky male doc asked me what my normal cycle was like and when I told him I honestly dont know as I had been on one form of contraception or another since I was 17 his reply was most constructive "well no one forced you to"
Actually, they did.
Hope you all keep getting better and better. x

Hi again, Its difficult to reply to all the ladies who are still struggling post removal, particularly over heavy ongoing bleeding. I bled very heavily straight after removal for 9 days then it stopped. I then had 2 weeks with no bleeding but got good old fashioned PMS for a few days, which in some ways was a relief and a sign all was getting back to normal. I then had a really heavy period for 3 days but it tailed off and only lasted 6 days where as with the mirena in, it was light but lasted 2 weeks. Now this first post removal period is out of the way I am feeling so good! Sex drive back...naughty thoughts coming to me randomly...never happened with the mirena in!!! My skin is clear of all the spots I hadn't connected to the mirena and the facial hair is now almost gone! which is another side effect I had not connnected to the mirena. I have also lost 5lb in weight. Now that may be because I have replaced one meal a day with a healthy smoothy but the fact I had the motivation to make this change I put down to being more myself again. I am sorry for all the women who have posted who are still bleeding etc. For those who are trying to regain control of their body by taking the contraceptive pill, I wonder if its better to get hormones out of your system all together for while. I am using condoms and spermicide and being very careful...aged 39 with 3 kids I dont want to get pregnant but I do think my body needs to know what its doing without artificial hormones, before I consider using them again. That way at least you know if you get side effects that they are definately hormone related. Someone put on a post about different women, metabolising the hormone in the mirena differently. Somewhere on a medical website it said that there is a difference of up to seven fold in absorption rates of the mirean hormone in women. Therefore it makes sense that some of us absorb more hormone than others and get more side effects.
I know for a fact that I had side effects...ironically I only know it now for sure because just over a month after I have had it removed...so much has changed!
love to you all and hang in there...it will get better!!

It is 2 weeks tomorrow since I had the Mirena Coil removed and I feel much better. The bleeding stopped a couple of days ago and it wasn't as bad as I expected. My hair is still thin but I think it will take a while to grow back.
My husband has told me I look so much brighter and happier, which I am.
I do realise that the Mirena does suit some women but if you happen to be one of the women it doesn't suit it can ruin your life imo.

I'm new to this forum.I got Mirena in Dec 2007 and got it removed on June 19th.Since then ..on June 21 st I had bleeding with a lots of clots and still bleeding as of now. I have Polycystic liver disease and I came to know about that when I felt something hard below my rib cage but my OB-Gyn shrugged off saying its just like that. After the birth of my second child the cyst had enlarged a bit and my gynae asked for an ultrasound and they came to know about liver cysts which I have too many.According to Drs they increase and enlarge during pregnancy and extra hormones. My doctor convinced me that as Mirena has localised hormones and they don't go in the bloodstream they will not affect my liver cysts and I agreed to get Mirena. One and half year after that my cyst has increase quite a bit and this was the main reason to take Mirena out though my Dr still is convinced that its not due to Mirena.Other than that,I had acne, bloating, heart palpitations ,dizzy feeling and tiredness all the time. So I'm just hoping it improves or atleast stablise my growing cysts. My dr was adamant not to take it out saying I'll come back for that again coz my periods would be heavier.....and this is the best birth control option for me.

Its been a week since removal, I went straight back on the pill. Period started day 2 and has stopped and started and at times been very heavy with clots - ugh! anyway its still going. 2 days after removal I guess I had the 'crash'. I can honestly say I've never felt so depressed in all my life, I was teary, angry, snappy and I really felt like I'd never be happy again. I was also absolutely exhausted like I'd had no sleep. Thankfully it only lasted 2 days and I'm feeling completely normal and happy now. Feeling less bloated and am wearing clothes I've not worn for ages, but still 2 stone to lose - about 1 or 2lb loss so far.

I had Mirena for 20 months and just had it taken out Monday afternoon. I initially went to the Gyn because I couldn't take the acne, weight gain & hair loss anymore. I never even had acne as a teenager. I had put on 10 lbs in just a few months and it would not budge.
I told my Dr that my hormones had to be out of whack. Pimples all over the place, shedding that put my cats to shame, and weight gain while eating only 1500 cal/day, less than 10g carbs and exercising! She actually mentioned that maybe it was the Mirena, but we decided to run some blood work first.
My testosterone came back horribly low. My Dr was expecting it to be high since I was exhibiting all the symptoms of PCOS. I don't know what unit of measurement they use, but she said my T range should be between 14 and 88. Mine was 4.7. No wonder I could care less if I ever had sex with my husband again!
After that we did additional blood work for thyroid (normal) and DHEA-S (low-normal). Dr said she had 2 other women in the last month complaining of the same symptoms as me and she was going to stop recommending it to patients.
I had some spotting the first 2 days after removal and now have a steady, but normal flow. It's mostly brown, but no clots (I never stopped having my period with Mirena.) On the 2nd day I noticed that my breasts felt softer - not as swollen I guess. The best part is that the pimples immediately started going away and I've already lost 2 lbs. I'm tired in the afternoons, but nothing I can't deal with.
I'm astounded that the U.S. patient pamphlet doesn't list all the side effects it should. If I look up Norplant side effects, I have virtually every one of them (same drug), but the magical Mirena hormone supposedly doesn't leave my uterus. Since when did my uterus become the Fortress of Solitude?? Please....

I am 36 and had the Mirena inserted in 8/07 (two months after my 2nd child was born). Following the procedure, I had some mild cramping and spotting. I spotted on and off for a several weeks. Before the Mirena, my periods were always light and only lasted 4 or 5 days with no cramping. 6 months after the Mirena, my periods were gone. I had no discomfort or recollection of side effects with the Mirena.
Three weeks ago, I had the Mirena removed. I experienced some spotting the following day and started my first period a few days ago. The period has been heavy with some clotting and mild cramping (this is unlike my normal periods before Mirena). I hope that since this is just my first period following the removal of the device that it will be atypical of future cycles?
My husband and I hope to conceive as soon as possible, but were told to wait until I have had three cycles so my uterine lining has time to thicken.
I am sorry to hear about others' scary experiences with the Mirena and hope that things get better for them. I am just ready to have normal cycles again so we can get this baby thing moving!

Hi everyone, Just wanted to write again and keep everyone updated since it's been just shy of a month since the Mirena's been out. I haven't felt this good in a very long time! I have energy again, my mood is so much better, and the libido is back. Still have a few pounds left to lose, but I'm about half way through losing the 10-pounds I gained on Mirena. It's looking good! One strange thing though, is that I haven't really had much of a period since it's been out. I bled initially for a couple days, but not heavy and nothing since then. How long did it take everyone else to get their cycle going again?

Hi Ladies, I'm so pleased to have found this site! I had my mirena removed 4 weeks ago and haven't had any bleeding since the initial removal but in the last week my breasts have become very sore. Does anyone know if this is a normal side effect after removal and also what are peoples experiences regarding the length of time it took for their cycle to get back to normal?

Its been 3 weeks today and I feel like I'm in limbo waiting for my hormones to kick in (if they ever will?) My hair is still falling out but my hairdresser has noticed I have new hair regrowth at last.
I had such high hopes when my Consultant suggested the Mirena but he didn't tell me that my hair would drop out and I would be so depressed, if he had I might have decided to try something else.
I wish I could turn the clock back 6 months and I would have had this removed sooner before I got so low.

I have mirena right now, but I have an appointment to have it removed on jul 14, I can't wait I have most of the symptoms you all talk about...I wanted to share something with you, I,m studying in natural medicine and those of you that are expirencing hormonal abnormalities still after removal of mirena, here are some free tips on rebalancing the hormons back to normal. Complexe b vit + B6 pissenlit(dandelion) in capsules for the liver and Ginger in capsules, ginger is great, Girls for regulating womens hormones as well as gazy feeling and nausea...also great for getting rid of cellulite a bonus... Important to buy the good quality kind to get good results I would suggest buying all of the above in a Natural Food store and not a pharmacy I get mine from Natures Suneshine amazing products. That's it I hope this helps good luck to all of you Anniet

I had noticed that I had a swollen tummy while I had the Mirena which has now completely disappeared. Having just weighed myself I find I have lost 7lbs without even dieting.
Every week that passes I feel much better and I wish I had removed this sooner instead of letting Doctors persuade me it would get better with time - which is complete rubbish! I got worse side effects the longer I kept the Mirena.
Have a good day everyone.

To answer your question about your cycle, my cycle has started up again about 4 weeks post-Mirena. I had some inital bleeding when it was removed and nothing until a month later, when my period was about the same as how it went before Mirena (with the same side effects, flow, etc). I guess it just took a bit of time to get back to normal, and I'm happy to be Mirena free
