Well i must be the only person that had positive experiences with Merina!
I had 2 for a period of about 6 years, no problems what so ever.
I decided to become an egg donor at the beginning of the year so therefore had to have my Merina removed (9 months ago), had my hormones checked, which were spot on, my periods came back nice and regular straight away, now the only thing i've found is my mood swings are horrendous, not just premenstral but whenever - my poor partner I mean they are really, REALLY horrendous!!
I've just started taking 5HTP in order to feel normal again!
I also had a great experience at first with my Mirena -- I have always had very painful but light periods -- in April 05 I had the Mirena inserted and loved it!! I was a poster girl for Mirena -- always singing its praises. My period all but stopped! That is until this year when I started getting it every 3 weeks, still very light but started getting more and more painful. My Dr did an ultrasound to check placement which was fine and then started me on two cycles (7 days each) of estrogen therapy to no avail. I just had my Mirena removed yesterday and am extremely crampy!! Hopefully this will pass -- I am starting back on BC pills this morning to help control painful periods! I never experienced any of the side effects others have mentioned -- no weight gain or mood swings (am on antidepressants also) but never even thought that the IUD had anything to do with my lack of sex drive! If that's the case my husband will be happy!
I lasted two months on Mirena. Doctors told me it was the answer to my heavy period and that I shouldn't experience any side effects as the hormone was released locally. The first month was OK with daily spotting. The day of my first Mirena period i had a massive vertigo attack that lasted a couple of hours. Since then, i have felt very dizzy and my mood started to change , feeling increasingly low and anxious. last week i experienced panick attacks on a daily basis and thought i was going completely insane. Two days ago i asked my doctor to remove it and within half an hour I started to feel better, though quite shaky from the procedure. i just want to say that Mirena can have debilitating side effects and that it is certainly not for everyone.
Well, my experience with Mirena was great. I loved the fact that I didn't need to take pills every day. Never had bad symptoms, I actually think that it made me more sex active than ever. Since we want another baby I had my Mirena removed last week Nov. 28th. I have to say that having that thing removed was like giving birth for the second time. The doc. couldn't find the strings so she inserted a hook, which made me, bleed like crazy and I couldn't stand the pain and the craps. The doc. said that my options were and ultra sound and surgery, I new I didn’t need those so I told the doctor to let me try to feel the strings by myself with a glove I was able to find them and after that she was able to see them and remove that thing. I have been bleeding since then. I hope to get pregnant soon so I will let you know. One thing I know for sure, if we stressed out too much about getting pregnant that lowers our chances. So let’s be positive and hope for the best...
It's now 10 days since I had my mirena removed and I feel absolutely wonderful now! I can't believe just how bad I was feeling. I have stopped feeling overwhelmed with tiredness, my mood has returned to normal and I've stopped feeling dizzy all the time. Best of all my libido has returned in a big way! I'm not sure whether or not my husband is delighted or just plain worn out! I've spent the last few days feeling really maternal too. I'm hoping that's just a side effect of messing around with my hormones, as we had decided not to have any more children.
I did experience the 'crash' that others have talked about, but it happened immediately on days 1-4 post-removal. I had felt fabulous since then.
Although I loved my mirena for the first 18 months, I really did have a dreadful time with it recently, which I didn't pick up on because my Dr did not warn me that side effects can develop after time. If you're reading this and feel that you are having trouble with your mirena, have it taken out.
Had my Marina removed yesterday after 2 Years. (second one had another for 5 years before)
I had to have it taken out because a regular smear showed I had Actinomycosis in my IUD.
It hurt a bit when they pulled it out but nothing to bad. I had the contraceptive injection at the same time as I decided not to have another Mirena at least for now.
Has anyone else experienced Actinomycosis, only for the last 6-8 months I had been feeling like crap (still do) and loads of things seem to be wrong with me, all though I would never have dreamt these things could be down to Mirena.
I am bloated to kingdom come, I gained weight and can't lose it, I get lower back pains and belly aches a lot and since August now I seem to have permanent acid reflux all though this might not be related.
Not sure if I feel better yet or not as at the moment I am dog tired and have some cramping.
I had my Mirena removed 9 days ago. Felt brillant until day 6 when I started to "crash". Feeling low, at times very anxious and very very dizzy. I hope it lifts soon, and hope that you are now feeling better Racquel.
Please can anyone help me, I had my mirena out on the 16th november 07, this was my second one (my first was in for 5yrs and was replaced in May 07). I had weight gain and mood swings with the first coil but did not put the two together, but had many more syptoms with my second coil, foggy head confusion, headaches to name a few. I always had very regular very light periods whilst on the coil ( I have been sterilised and had the coil fitted for heavy periods) and was mid way thru my circle when I had it removed. The removal was easy not much pain some bleeding for a few days some heavy, I have not had much since just 1 day mildly heavy about a week and half after I should of had a period My real worry is my weight which is going up dispite not over eating I feel really bloated and just feel suicidal as everyone else seems to have it removed and loses weight I know its early days, yesterday I started to experienced the "crash" which so many have although must admit on about day 9 I woke up feeling fantastic better than I have done for the past 5 years.
I'm just so upset with the weight gain please can any one give me some hope
I am having my Mirena removed on Jan. 31, so wanted to give a big THANK YOU to all who have posted! Such great tips and I am very concerned with my post-Mirena symptoms. I have to mention, though, that my 5-year Mirena experience has been wonderful. I've loved it the whole time. I'll check back and let you know how the removal goes.
Gina - hadn't seen a response to you and I have no insight at the point so sorry. Are things getting better?

Hope all goes well with your removal, mine was not painful at all and I hope your goes the same way.
I have been taking natural supplements Angus Castus, Milk Thistle, vit B complex and 5hpt and the "mood crash " has subsided. I have had no real bleeding since it was removed keep thinking that something is going to happen but nothing so far.
As for the weight I'm just getting over a very nasty bout of flu and at present have not eaten properly for 5 days, the only up side to this is that I have lost about 8lbs.
Hello all! I am new here, and getting my IUD out tomorrow. I have had a year of fatigue, anxiety, mood swings, etc., with NO idea it could be the Mirena. In the last two months, I started losing a lot of my already fine hair, and last week I stumbled across the truth about Mirena, and I am still in shock. I just pray that getting it out will turn things around and that my hair will grow back.
I am on a multi-vitamin. What else should I start to help things get back on track, and to help with the crash? And what is 5hpt? What does it do and where would I find it? If I start on progesterone, is it a cream sold at the pharmacy?
Finally, should I avoid any other form of hormonal birth control until things are right? Thanks! Stacy
5hpt is a herbal remedy which I heard about on another mirena forum. It is supposed to help with mood crashes and negitive feelings but you should not take it if you are taking medicine for depression.
I also had lots of hair loss whilst I had the mirena coil ( I did not associate the coil with this) but now I have had it removed I have noticed a marked reduction on the amount of hair which I am losing.
Progestrone cream does not seem easy to obtain in the UK I have brought some Yam cream which I have read mixed reports.
Its really an individual thing which method of birth control you choose but personally I would not put any false hormones into my body again after my experience with mirena, I realise now that hormones are such a delicate thing messing around with them can have far reaching consquences which we may not be fully aware of yet
I do hope the removal went smoothly with not much pain
New to forum, thank god I'm finding people who have had experiences like mine... I have had the Mirena in for 3 months. I am having the worst time with this thing! I have been bleeding for about 2 1/2 weeks of every month, anxiety through the roof, crying episodes like never before, and eating, eating, eating!! Not to mention hair loss, cramping and anger episodes. Making appointment tomorrow to have it removed asap. Does anyone think I'll experience the hormonal crash? Thank you ladies for sharing, it really helps to know I'm not the only one.

Hi everyone, and thanks for your reply, Gina ... had my coil out yesterday, and all went well. No cramping or bleeding yet. I did get a copy of the insert that comes with Mirena, and it does mention the slight chance for hair loss, which is my main symptom. I don't believe I was given that when it was inserted. What I find interesting is that some people experience hair loss right away, while others take several months.
I think at this point I will stick to a multi vitamin as I have not had severe mood swings. I am just crossing my fingers that the hair loss stops soon, and that it eventually grows back.
Hi I am new here. I found this site while searching for side effects of Mirena. I had it out 21 days ago and have felt worse now than before. I felt pretty bad before as well. I am full on depressed now, with nausea, having anxiety, extremely fatigues, some pain in my abdomen and overall yuck. I have not had a proper bleed since removal. I spotted for a few days post removal(it was wedged into my cervix which made removal hell). Any help is apreciated I am starting to wonder if this is Mirena related or I am truly ill.
Have a read of my previous post. Also have a look at this link http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=713&c=0&p=34 there are lots of people discussing the side effects of mirena and this is where I found out about 5hpt.
Angus Castus (google it to find out more) is also very good and helps regulate hormones I must admit although I have yet to have a period my moods have are now really good and I feel better than I have for years.
Hi. My last update was a couple of weeks ago when I was feeling really really well after having my mirena out. However, things have sort of taken a turn for the worse! I got my first period 22 days after removal. On the day I got my period I just completely 'crashed' and have been feeling really awful in the 2.5 weeks since. I am so fatigued that even the smallest task seems impossible, I have the head-fog back and my muscles are aching and twitchy. I feel so unwell. I have seen my GP and have asked to be referred to an endocrine consultant. I am seeing him on Wednesday. I really feel totally debilitated.
To make things worse, I am in Africa on holiday until Monday. I have been feeling awful since I arrived. I read all the posts about 5 HTP but I can't find any here. I did find St Johns Wort which seems to have really helped me with the fatigue. I'm going to keep taking it til I get home.
Has anybody else had this type of 'crash' after a few weeks or when they got their period?
Thank you for the link to curezone. It amazes me that this coil is even on the market. In the short time that I had the Mirena in, it damn near drove me crazy. I had so many side effects. I absolutely did not feel like myself. I'm really afraid and feel that I probably have a long road to full recovery. I just cannot believe that OB\GYNs recommend this thing. My OB said this thing was "great". "No period, you'll be so happy." Well -- if it's something I learned from this experience, it's that you really cannot trust people (even doctors) as to what is best for you. Let's not forget, these doctors get a "monetary kickback" for how many of these things they prescribe. Bayer's website has information on the Mirena as well as a toll free number to call to report serious side effects.
Hi everyone, i'm 46 years old and have had the mirena for about 10 years with no probs at all.The latest one just fell out before christmas.Since then i have had many mood swings, backache and hot sweats!!! Have only had slight bleeding on about day 3 and 4. I am wondering if i have started the menapause but it's difficult to tell. Was the minera hiding the dreaded symptons? HELP !!!
Hey all. I had mine about 11 days ago, and I have had a bad couple of days, mood wise, but I expected that. I had one day of heavy bleeding, and I am pretty sure I am ovulating right now. I honestly believe the doctors don't know enough about the product. Many don't take the time to read the insert (I had a medical person on another message board tell me that the doctors can't possibly know all the side effects!) and they just push it cause it can be great for some, instead of thinking about the masses. This same person also told me that it doesn't cause you to stop ovulating, which isn't true, and that it DOES say hair loss is a side effect on the package insert. Of course it does. But that is what the doctor gets - we don't get that insert, we get the brochure. I am just really frustrated, cause I feel like a large group of us have been victimized, and I don't see anything changing for future users.
I am hoping my aches and pains and more importantly my hair gets better in the next few months. I thought I noticed an increase in loss a few days ago, but I am hoping I am wrong. I only had the IUD about 9 months, so I am hoping the hair comes back.
