Hi Ladies

Yesterday I finally out the dreaded mirena out after approx 2 years of having it in. [Smiler][Smiler][Smiler] It had almost ruined my life with loss of libdo, painful sex, pregnancy symptoms and crazy panic/rage attacks and the list goes on as you all know. I did try antidepressants for a while which were helping, but I then thought I shouldn't have to deal with taking pills everyday to keep me sane!!!! So after discussions with my husband I decided to have it out.

I am only 26 and I have a 2 and a bit year old daughter, we aren't in a hurry to have another baby yet so I thought I would go on the pill. I have just been reading through the Mirena and Weight gain thread to see how long it will take for the symptoms of craziness and the tire around my tummy to go away and saw that someone on there said that the Yasmin pill killed there libido??? I have only taken one pill so far, but now I'm worried that I've switched from one horrible contraception to another???

Has anyone else used the Yasmin pill and how has it affected them? My doctor gave me it and said that it has the lowest dose of hormone and that it has the least side effects. Please help!!!!!

The progesterone that is used in Yasmin is unique, no other pill type uses it. Many women are having a great experience with Yasmin when they had a rough time on other pills. The thing that makes this progesterone unique is that it has ZERO androgenous properties associated with this. Angrogenous properties are testosterone-like properties, which all other types of progesterones have to some degree. The levonorgestrel in Mirena has one of the HIGHEST androgen degrees. Side effect typically associated with high-androgen are acne, agression, weight gain, loss of hair on the head and growth of body hair. So you shouldn't see these types of side effects.
Loss of libido can be a side effect of ANY type of hormonal birth control. But not all people react the same way, so you may not have this problem while on Yasmin. A few close friends of mine use this pill and report that they haven't been "happier" in that dept.
There are some side effects that are exclusive to Yasmin. The DRSP is a mild diuretic, that's why its promoted for women who have problems with bloating mid-cycle. But because of this, it can cause your blood levels of potassium to get high. Signs of high potassium levels are irregular heartbeat or missing heartbeats, weakness, muscle fatigue. If you start feeling very odd, call your doctor and remind him you are on Yasmin and ask about the potassium issue. This is a pretty rare side effect, but it can be serious so I wanted to make sure you know. Here in the States, the prescribing info states that a blood test should be done after one month of Yasmin use to check for high potassium levels. Of course most doctor's don't do this as it would be too costly for our insurance companies (USA insurance can be a nightmare). The info also says to not use Yasmin if you are on long term ibuprofen, naproxen (such as Aleve) or potassium sparing diuretic use as these can contribute to the potassium issue.
I imagine you should give it a go, most users of Yasmin are very happy with it.

Hi Julie

Thanks so much for all that great information. The things you described make this pill sound perfect for me. Maybe my doctor does know what he is talking about after all.[Razzer] That is a big relief and I will keep an eye out for any odd feelings. I might also get a blood test in a month to make sure everything is on track. Visits to the doctor here are much cheaper and hardly anyone has medical insurance. We are a bit lucky in dept. Thanks again!

Hi Kiwi,
You could try a none hormonal coil, they are so easy but in some girls they give heavy periods. I was one of them.
I found all hormones send me do-lally so had to get sterilised in the end.
Give this new pill a change, but note all symptoms no matter how odd, such as itchy legs, bad sleeping or flashing eyes, things that don't even seem connected.
Keep a small diary beside your bed and fill it in daily with how you feel that day from good to depressed and all things inbetween. If you see a pattern then it may be the pill.
Good luck
Angie

Hi have just been taken off the Yasmin pill. Was on it 2 months and it caused nausea, migraines, headaches. It made me very tired, feeling bloated etc.

I did not realise how bad my symptoms were until I came off it 7 days ago, within 2 days the migraines had gone, and within 7 days by tum is looking and feeling a hell of a lot less bloated.

good luck.

Danjen, I can't understand why some girls have such dramatic side effects with artificial hormones. Surely this must have been noticed at the experimental stage.

I think depression, PMS and all the physical side effects are just not worth the benefits that the pill etc bring us.

I don't know what the answer is but maybe the men have to take more of the strain now.

I am glad you are feeling better now.
