Hi Vicky, They are no fun! I have had one from birth and it gets bad from time to time if I wait too long for the loo.I tried GTN cream but because it is a vasodilator (makes blood vessels swell) it can be absorbed into the system and give you headaches!! Strange that rubbing cream on your bum should do that but I found it a bit unpleasant! If you have had advice on surgery they should advise you of the risks of cutting into anal muscle or rectal tissue and I think it is worth trying to manage your diet first so that you dont put the tear under too much strain. They can be managed without surgery but a good surgeon is always worth considering but research them well.
hello everyone. Well im new here and would like to wish everyone here the best and merry christmas. My question is simple but yet embarrasing also. Anyway 3 days ago i had anal fissure surgery (AKA) the dragon. I have not yet had a bowel movement due to not eating barely anything. Im taking metamucil etc to insure soft stool. My question is has anyone experienced being afraid to go #2 after anal fissure surgery? Ive just lived with this fissure for almost a year now and just can't stand the thinking about the pain any longer. So basically, am i gonna be in a lot of pain? Especially knowing i have stitches coming out? Anyone that can help would be appreciated. Thank you.
I had Botox Injections in December 2007 to heal my Anal Fissures ( I had two). I went a whole year, in pain, agnony, and went to the dr and they thought I had piles and then I went to see a specialist and he told me that I had a Fissure. Well 5 weeks after the Botox and I had NO PAIN!!!! What a result, I am now 2 months down the line and go to the toilet every day with no pain, I had also got to the point of not having a bowel movement for days on end, as I think I knew it would hurt and so didn't want to go etc. So I wanted to let you know what worked for me as I was on this forum alot....
Good Luck all, Rachel

Thanks for letting me know. I have had to toatlly change my diet too, I eat Bran Flakes every day and lots of Oranges, plenty of Fibre to ensure that I go every day to avoid constipation and therefore Straining as I was concerened that the Botox may wear off, so watch this space.. God I am keeping my fingers and Toes crossed, don't think I can go through that again...
Hope you are feeling better soon too,
Take Care,
Rachel

Well its been a long time since i posted last, but thats because I've just had 6 months of continual agony. It started really badly again last august, and just wouldn't completely go away. Fortunately, due to a change in jobs I now had private health care, and after several trips to my GP I finally got referred to a specialist.
He was very good, and initially put me on a new product that's not yet available most areas on the NHS, called Anoheal. Now I warn you, this stuff is bloody expensive if you are in an area where it isn't NHS approved, like 150 pounds for a 30mg tube. After about 6 weeks (the cream worked ok for a while) I went back as I was still in pain for 4-8 hours a day after a bowel movement. Turns out I had massive piles internally, and he took me in for injections to reduce them. Another couple of months or so later, the piles apparently having cleared somewhat, I was still in agony every day, massively relieved by the cream i must note, I went back and he then decided it really wasn't getting any better and we had tried everything, and booked me in for surgery. Now this is the good bit, because he doesn't approve of the NHS procedure to cut the muscle, and said he would 'scrape' the wound, giving it a clean edge, and also provide Botox injections (available on private no problem). Well that was nearly a month ago now, and despite a couple of days post-op not being able to go to the loo (the last 6 months having gone every day) I eventually managed to go, and although I bled for a couple of days, within a week I was on the loo every day, no blood and comfortably passing every stool without pain.
A few weeks on, its hard to forget the pain of the past 6 months, but every day I mentally thank that doctor for his time in effort in 'fixing' me.
I'm a bloke by the way, and I honestly hope to dear god I never have to go through that again, I was barely functional and almost ruined my relationship with my lovely girlfriend (through lack of sex drive, who wants to have sex when you are in so much pain?).
Now i'm finally getting my life back on track, I wish you all the best in also getting better.
I hope someone can help. I had botox for the anal fissures it was suposed to make me feel better in a few days this is day four and I have been in hell since the procedure was done i hurt so darn bad it makes me sick. today is my birthday party and i just want to lay down and cry. does anyone know how long the pain last after a botox injection to the spincter muscle? please help with any info thanks so much.

I was wondering if anyone here would recommend surgery for fixing an anal fissure? I first had a fissure around 2 years ago, but on off since then it has come and gone, and I have used various creams, most don't work, only one does and it clears up for a few weeks and then comes back again with a vengence. Last Oct I went to see a doctor at hospital and he said I should carry on using Rectogesic (the best one, even if a side effect is Strong migraines) because he would recommend avoiding surgery at all costs, because it could make things worse.
But then I went to my GP this Feb when it came back and got worse and she said that she would refer me to a doctor because she disagreed with the earlier one and said it was pointless me suffering like this, and the surgery wouldn't be worse so she would recommend it. So I was seriously considering getting surgery for but it cleared up so I didn't bother going. But now it has come back in the last week or so, I am seriously considering having the operation.
The thing is I have had conflicting advice from my current GP and one of the doctors I saw last year I mentioned earlier. Does anyone think surgery would be worth it? Has anyone else suffered from this? Whoever coined the phrase that it is like letting glass through your anus is correct. It can be awful pain.
I don't know why it keeps coming back, I eat enough fibre, I excersise daily and my diet at the moment is good. The bizzare thing is it seems to get worse when I eat healthier than when I eat rubbish junk food.
Hi been there done that, and I know what you are going through, I had the surgery the 22 of last month and I will tell you it did hurt like hell and for a week i did wish i never had the surgery but the surgon stiched my fissures back together and I am so much better now so very much better . I dont know if its proper but my email is pammiejpenn@aol.com email me if you would like. Pam

hi, i'm new to this site but have suffered with anal fissure since the birth of my son who is now 15mths. i have tried everything and have spent hours researching this condition and it's only the past few months that i've had relief. i've tried rectogesic and anoheal but neither helped and the next stage was surgery however my local NHS only offer anal dilation and at over a 40% chance of some kind of faecal incontinence i declined also because i wanted to have another baby. i'm now 16 weeks pregnant and perhaps it could be down to the progesterone relaxing my muscles which has really helped however this coincides with my discovery of wheatgrass recovery cream i think it's called dermawheat. i've been using it for 3 mths and managed to last 9 weeks without a tear and even when it happened it healed much quicker than usual pain gone in 3 days. i haven't torn since and that was 6 weeks ago - fingers crossed! it cost £15 and worth every penny! of course i eat high fibre and drink lots of water and if i feel i haven't been good with the fibre intake i'll take a fibogel sachet.if you type in wheatgrass and anal fissure into a search engine it should take you to a site with lots of info about it.hope this helps i like to read about self help tips and i have a few that have helped me if anyone is interested!
Hi pampellis I had surgery last November for hemorrhoids. I have had problems with anal fissures since. I have used ointments but they are not working. My surgeon said I need to have Botox injections. Did you have any problems with incontinence after this procedure.

Hi pampellis Did you have the surgery because the botox didn't work. In another of your quotes you are saying how painful the botox was?
