Hi Lorraine (& any other reusable nappy users),

I have been using disposables so far and would really like to give reusables a try. Assume I know nothing, where do i start?
Which brands are better?
Do i need covers, nappies & liners?
How many do i need?
explain the process of changing/storage/washing/drying??
and any other tips/hints you can think of?!
i read last year that the environmental impact of collection/laundry services was the same as using disposables, what do you think? or shd i try to wash at home?

Hi Katy

I use reusables and think they are absolutely great.

I currently use Bambino Mio Nappies and they are sooo easy and Grace looks really cute in them.

They are just a cloth that you fold to fit in the Nappy wrap and then place a liner on top.

Once you change baby you just flush the liner down the loo and then soak the cloth in a bucket of warm water with a scoop of powder, once you get enought to do a wash put them on a hot wash.

I bought mine from John Lewis, it came in a pack of 12 with 3 nappy wraps and cost 33, this lasts all day but I had to buy some extra wraps as Grace is sooo messy.

I have used the Rainbow tots nappy which looks absolutely gorgeous on Grace but very expensive if I wanted her to wear those all the time.

I hope this helps.

I know Lorraine sells some nappies, wraps and liners.

I have bought from her and they are brilliant.

Love Jen x

Hi Katy

I love re-usable nappies, my daughter Chloe is now potty trained but I have my new baby boy in re-usable nappies now, he is 13 weeks old.
I use fuzzi bunz nappies which are poscket nappies and they are brilliant, come in lots of colours. I put a liner in them which I flush down the loo, and I use a nappy wrap (nature babies) and this is my nappy. They are easy to wash and dry very quickly.

I dy pail my nappies, which is basically I put them in a dry bucket with a lid on, and when I put them on to wash I spray the bucket and lid with antibactiral srpay, which cleans it and makes it smell nice.

I sell nappy wraps and nappy liners and some nappies if you are intersted?

I wash my own, and dry on the line or in the bathroom on an airer.

Hiya,

I'm another clothie, I use allsorts on mine! My favs at the moment are tots bots bamboozles and fuzzi bunz.

When I first started I contacted an organisation called Team Lollipop. I filled out a form on their website and an advisor local to me contacted me and came round to show me all the different types of reusable nappies there are, and talk me through environmental issues, costs and care etc. I really really recommend contacting them as its invaluable having someone to speak to in the flesh about it so to speak.

Go to http://www.teamlollipop.co.uk/ and click on the 'our advisors' link, at the bottom there is a link to click to send them your details and then they will contact you.

http://www.kittykins.co.uk/advice - This is a great website with advice and a multitude of nappies to buy, they also sell Incentive Kits which are made up of all you need to try out cloth nappies and see how you get on.

http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/Advice/Default.asp - Another great advice site.

Your local council might run a real nappy incentive scheme where you can get vouchers to put towards real nappies or free trials etc. Put your postcode in here to see if your local authority runs a real nappy incentive scheme http://www.realnappycampaign.com/nappyfinder/

Hope this is helpful to you!

Hi Girls

I was just talking to rob about reusable nappies as I said when Joshua was born I would try them, but can you all explain how they work, what I need to buy to try them? and what bits need washing? I had a look on the tots bots website and looked at the demo bit and the bit the liner goes in does that bit have to be washed every time? I'm confused as there are so many and wouldn't have a clue which I would try and I don't want to buy a load and then not get on with them.

Love Kay xxx

Team Lollipop, I cannot stress how helpful this service is! Its easy for people to tell you on the net what they like etc, but until you've seen them for yourself you don't really know what's what.

http://www.teamlollipop.co.uk/

Use the contact an advisor link and they will send someone round with every type of nappy you can think of and they will show you how to use them, how to store and wash them, the costs and everything else involved.

I think I should work for Team Lollipop, i'd love talking to people about real nappies all day.

I use a variety of nappies myself, my favs are tots bots bamboozles with a motherease or nature babies (from lorraine [Big Grin]) wrap over them, and Fuzzi Bunz, which dont need a seperate wrap but do need an absorbant insert to put in them. Inside the nappy you can use a flushable liner which collects the poop and you just flush it, or a reusable fleece liner which you have to sluice the poop off of. Sounds messy but they are very good at keeping bottoms dry as they wick the wetness away from babies skin.

You also need a nappy bucket to store the dirty nappies in, you dont need to soak them these days as they can all be washed in the machine at 60 degrees, I use a mesh inside the bin which is just like a big net so you just put the net with all the nappies in straight into the machine. Its best to wash them with a quarter of the normal amount of non bio washing powder, no softerner as this affects absorbancy and you can use a nappy whitener to remove any stains. I also put white vinegar and a few drops of tea tree oil in the fabric softener drawer which helps keep the nappies soft and fresh.

A tumble drier is helpful for drying in the winter, but not essential. In the summer nappies look fab drying on the line, and the sun is a natural stain remover.

Its honestly really easy to use reusable nappies, and much more cost effective. You can sell and buy second hand nappies on ebay.

Convert to cloth, its fab!

thanks for all the advice, i have a contact here through the NCT who does nappy demos so i think i will try and arrange to meet up with her next week sometime.
i fancy the fuzzi bunz most i think but will keep looking on the net at all the other types.
how many does everyone have? the fuzzi website suggests 12 but i'm not too organised with laundry as it is so may need more?
