Hi Jaclyn! I have found it really difficult balancing breast feeds and solids and I'm never sure if he is having enough of each. Some days he will only breast feed, other days all he wants are solids and sometimes he hardly has either. I've just gone through a bad patch when he refused to eat whatever I gave him, pure faddiness I'm sure. I found that really worrying. But he looks healthy enough!

His weight gain was erratic when he first went on to solids and he actually lost half a pound over two weeks. He was about five months old then. He's 6 1/2 months now. My health visitor advised me to give him three meals a day and three breast feeds. It was really hard. As soon as he started three meals a day he stopped breast feeding altogether (and this is a baby who won't drink formula) I was really worried my milk would dry up. I fed him in his sleep because he would suck as a reflex and that was the only way I could get milk into him. Then he began refusing all the solids apart from fromage frais (loves it!)and having just breast. I was afraid he would start losing weight again. But things seem to have sorted themselves out now and he has more or less what the hv advised. I think from seven or eight months two breast feeds a day is considered sufficient, though I suppose they would have to have water or something for the fluid.
As regards the amount of solids I give him I just keep giving it till he starts pushing the spoon away. The amount is usually about one four month jar of baby food or equivalent home made stuff, and dessert, usually fruit or yoghurt, at each meal.

emmasmummy, our children sound so alike!
My son has two meals a day, has probably 3 feeds in the day, cluster feeds in the evening and then feeds during the night quite a bit too and he goes to bed about the same time as emma, the difference is my son is only 22weeks old, are you having trouble with your daughter feeding during the night or does she sleep through yet??
Tommy is a big baby for his age (19lbs 12oz) so i think i will be adding a third meal quite soon, to see if the extra food helps him to sleep a bit better.

I have been giving him lunch and dinner too, however today i have given him breakfast, lunch and dinner and the same amount of breast feeds, i guess i'm hoping for a mirical with the whole sleeping through the night thing!
i have gone from 5wakings to two a night so i guess i should be greatful for that!

I'm not sure if you have been on the baby whisperer site for advise on getting her to stop feeding to sleep, but i know there are an awful lot of people who have had the same problems and got over that!
You could give it a try if you want to stop this,

Hi there!

i Have been giving tommy three meals a day for about a week now and he seems to sleep for a little longer between feeds at night (5hours instead of 3)
And he actually goes to bed at a half decent time to 10.30 not 12.30!!)
I usually give him hipp banana cereal for breakfast at 10.30, Veg for lunch and a yogurt at 2.30, and for dinner he has what ever im having ( within reason) he's has spaghetti bolognaise, Jacket potato, and a few other things Pured i just dont add any salt etc when im cooking, and a desert at 7.30. ( times depend on naps)
I also give him rusks&bread as a finger food ( which he just sucks to death!)

He usually has a nap at about 1 ish for around an hour sometimes more, and he also has a nap about 5.30 that one can go for anywhere between and hour and three.
Yep i do have msn kell_riley50@hotmail.com

Bye for now kelly and tommy
