my son is now 3months old and has always been quite a light sleeper at night, waking around 2/3times to b/feed however over the past few days i have noticed he has started to wake more than this. He is a big baby weighing 16lbs11 at the last weigh in, and i have also noticed he has been looking at my food when i eat, from the signs i would say he should be weaned onto solids but im not an expert as he is my first. Do you think 3months is too early to start weaning, should i listen to what he is telling me rather than what the "book" say??

Hi Kell I had a spell of wondering if I should start to wean my 3 month old too.I was breast feeding every 2-3 morning and night, I was convinced she was not getting enough, I decdied to introuduce forumular at night it worked she now has a 6oz bottle about 7-8 ish and will sleep 6-7 hours which is bliss.
(im not sugguesting you stop feeding yourself)
so this meant I did not wean her. I have also read in books and even on the jars that you should not wean untill 4months but the later the better as they babies have problems digesting. When I had my son I was told 3 months everything changes, I would have a word with H/V they have seen it all but remember MUM KNOWS BEST.

thank you for replying!
Tommy is now four months (depending on how you look at it i.e weeks or months) i decided to wait but have now started to introduce solids, so far we have had banana, carrots and rusks, however i am finding it more and more awkward to breast feed, as much as i try to prolong the time between feeds i am not getting far.
i have got it set into my mind that as of this weekend im going to concerntrate on getting him onto bottles/formula, but the only thing is im going to have to do it cold turkey. i have tried several time to give him a bottle with breast and formula milk but have had no joy.
my mum said she had the same problem with my sister and she had to leave her with a family member for 24hours to get her on bottles.
Do you think this is a bad way to do it?
does anybody know of any other ways that i could try with him?

I do like breast feeding but i also need a break sometimes (as im sure you all can sympathise) and i simply cant because he wont drink anything at all if im not there.

hiya kell

I dont know whAT bottles you are using but when i introduced bottles i found the avent teats quite hard, bearing in mind your son has had a soft nipple, so i brought them really cheap bottles, the long thin ones they have much softer teats, my daughter then used a bottle. Try that if that does not work get somone else to feed and u go in another room so that u are there if all hell breaks loose. it all thaks time and we all get there in the end. GOOD LUCK

Well today i left tommy with my mum for a few hours, i stopped breast feeding him at 10am and he went until 7:30pm without taking any bottles, he did however take some solids. after such a long time of not feeding i got worried that he may dehydrate so i gave in and fed him. I am using Avent bottles at the moment but i will try a different bottle, i guess as you say time id the key, thank you for your post, will let you know how thinks go!!

Well i tried different teats, and it seemed to work, on sunday night he took 3 1/2oz of breast milk from the bottle, which i was more than happy with. however i tried him again yesterday and had no such luck, he cried histerically for half an hour.
So now in confused!!!
I'll just have to keep trying him with it, hoping that one day it will just click!

When i started weaning tommy i started with banana (from my finger) and he loved it, he wasn't so happy to have it from the spoon until i tried different foods.
Now he eats banana, carrots, baby rice, baby yogurt, brocolli and a few other things.
Tommy is quite forward for his age so i decided to give him rucks as a sort of fingerfood and he loved making a mess with them.
I didn't want him to be a fussy eater ( especially when it comes to lumps!) so the food he has is not completly pureed, he seems to be coaping with the lumps pretty well!
