Does anyone know anything about it? Lucas had his 2 year check yesterday and the HV has refered him to have his hearing checked she has said it might be glus ear, she has also refered him to a speach therapist as he doesnt speak, and I mean he doesnt say even one word. Hv said that at minimum he should say 10 words but he doesnt even say mama or dada. Must admit I was a bit worried before but know I defo am.
Any advice would be great.

How weird that you have started this thread, my daughter who is just 5 is also being looked at for glue ear. It came to light when she had a hearing check at school last month and she failed in both ears. She had been complaining about not always hearing what the teachers said and at home i had always just put it down to a childs selective hearing (i am sure you know what i mean). Anyway the school nurse has sent off an urgent referral form to go to the hearing clinic where they will do another test and also check the ear drum. Molly has had reoccurring ear infections since she was 3 months old and has perforated her eardrum at least twice, so there could be scar tissue there adding to the problem.

Afraid i cant help with what will happen next as i have no idea myself, just wanted you to know that you arent alone and i know how worrying it can be. As Molly is a twin i can certainly tell the difference in her speach to that of her brother and it also answers the question as to why she doesnt really like talking on the telephone....she cant hear whats being said.

I will be interested to hear what happens next with your little one as i am sure your treatment will happen quicker than Mollys because of his age.

Thanks old mummy, I was told that I would be lucky if I hear anything this side of the summer holidays which is frustrating. The more I think about it the more I think she is right as he did the normal ma ma and da da before he was 1 but then it all stopped. He hasn't really had alot of ear infections but seemed to have virus after virus for about 10 months.

Hi Ladies

Hope you don't mind me posting, just thought I would let you know that my 9 year old suffers a lot with glue ear, I can always tell because he never seems to hear me, the doctor usually puts him on a liquid ant-histamine called " cetirizine" it works brilliantly. My older sister had it alot when she was younger and when she was 3 yrs old the hospital inserted tiny little grommits in her ear, totally painless (she was put to asleep) which allowed the gluey substance to drain away. They eventually fall out by themselves.
As for the speech problems my youngest son harly spoke at all and I was convinced there was a problem, he too suffered with ear infections when he was a baby, then suddenly he got to 4 yrs ols and hey presto now I can't shut him up lol

Hope that helps, Heidi xxx

Its great to hear (no pun intended!!) that the grommets work. Molly has yet another ear infection at the moment and perforated one ear drum twice this week already and been in awful pain (not much sleep for me either). Thankfully i had a phone call from ENT yesterday and they have a cancellation so she will be seen on the 8th to have her hearing checked again and a look at the ear drums, so hopefully i will get my diagnosis soon and then get the wheels in motion to get it sorted out.

I recall having this when I was a child, I got recurring earaches and was as deaf as a post! I had grommets, problem solved.

Hope that you get the help you need soon.

Molly had her appointment yesterday and as i suspected they want to retest in a couple of months because of the infection she had a couple of weeks ago. One ear was pretty much ok this time (which it wasnt at the last test), but the latest infected ear was well down the scale and she cant hear much thru that one at all at the moment....so its back to the waiting game for the time being.

I think we got the appointment thru quick because she had already been tested by the school nurse and since we are due to move in 2 weeks, they tried to get the diagnosis beforehand so we could take all necessary paperwork to our next GP, we were also lucky that we got a cancelled appointment. If you ring your hospital and say you would be willing to take a cancellation then perhaps you might get seen quicker. I wish you luck.
