I'm trying to wean my 20 week baby girl from the breast to the bottle and she is having none of it. I've tried loads of differnet bottles, teats, milk and the person giving it but still no success. She cries at the sight of it and pushes it away. Can any one help?

Today's episode of the Baby Whisperer is dedicated to weaning from breast to bottle. The show is on at 4pm and 8.30pm so why not watch and see if it helps.

There is nothing wrong with baby wanting the breast, sometimes breast feeding is just not practical, especially when you are in the middle of a superstore and your baby is screaming to be fed. I believe breast is best, but I do not want my 20 week baby boy to reject the bottle as my 5 year old daughter once did and refused to stop breastfeeding until she was 2 1/2 years.

It took me months to wean my first son off the breast and onto the bottle, despite trying every teat/bottle/brand of milk on the market, even forcing a dummy into his mouth did not work. I was due to go back to work, and even the health visitors were struggling to get him onto the bottle.

I do not want to go through this again with my new son, now 10 weeks old. At least if he learns the concept of sucking from a bottle, I will not be pulling my hair out like I was last time. I am planning on mix feeding, primarily breast, but it would be useful if at times he can take a bottle.

Does anyone know where you can get the Haberman feeding bottles that were refered to on the episode?

Just keep on trying. Try her with a bottle two or three times a day as I did my 20 week baby boy. At first he did not take it then oneday he did. Mind You, my 5 year old daughter refused the bottle as a baby. Some babies just don't like formula or the bottles.

try using a normal feeder cup, it worked for some of my friends. If you are out the room and your baby is hungry they ,ll take whatever's offered them after a few tears!!

whats wrong with feeding in middle of supermarket? i do it nearly everyday! nobody notices either and my sons 11 months, they just think he is asleep. just get a good sling and off you go walking/shopping and feeding! if you wanna give a bottle you have to find somewhere to heat it up, take the bottle with you all that palava. there are contraceptive benefits too of not giving bottles or dummies not to mention the disruption of the supply/demand method upon which breastfeeding works, as said before cup feeding is better, the nct sell cups even a premature baby can use. babies don't like formula cos it tastes totally different also it can upset the flora of a breastfed babies gut and increase risk of allergies etc not to mention the other risks formula bring!

I breastfed my little boy for 7 months. I would have breastfed longer but my supply of milk and his teeth put an end to that.
The following things worked for me when I weaned him onto goats formula (he is sensitive to cows milk protein which can cause excema).
I found the following things worked for us ( of course every baby is different)
Nipple shields when breastfeeding so he got used to the feel and taste of a teat instead of a nipple.
Also expressed breast milk in a bottle ( I used glass bottles rather than plastic) this got him used to the bottle. I also gave him water in the bottle throughout the day or baby fennel tea.
It might be worth trying goats formula instead of cow as it is supposed to taste more like the real thing? There are also very good cups which are suitable for small babies.

congratulations traymum for winning earth mother of the year, however please recognise that not everone has the confidence or inclination to wander around feeding in a supermarket or any public place for that matter, when at the end of the day bottles are there to allow us, as individuals, to exercise our freedom of choice.

It is not up to anyone other than the mother to decide, or be lectured about, different methods of feeding. Its personal choice!

I suppose the more mums feed in public the more used to it society will get. It's fine to choose to bottle feed but it would be good if mums weren't made to feel like a freak for breastfeeding in public!!

Before I had my son I was nervous about feeding in front of people but I really wanted to experience breastfeeding. After a few awkward days of me being all thumbs I got the hang of it, now I don't feel embarrassed at all and have fed him in restaurants and cafes. To be honest I even surprised myself, having said I would try to feed for about 6 weeks my son is now 15weeks and I'm still feeding him. Weaning hasn't entered my head yet, however I do agree that it's not for everyone and I wouldn't dream of claiming to be better than anyone else just because it worked for me. At the end of the day we're all Mothers, the most important person in their little lives!
