hi hun so sorry about this, do you know what I was thinking?, ring them or e-mail them back and tell them that your e-mail satisfies the requirement that the cancellation must be made in writing, after all did they stipluate that your cancellation must be by post?

just a thought but dont let them get away with it, they pry off people like us and its about time someone taught them a lesson. Let us know how you got on

I too have been scammed by models direct... paid them £128 and all i receive from them r a load of junk emails, never anything relating to work for my daughter with 'gorgeous big brown eyes' (they fooled me too). I registered with them October last year. I just hope they cannot access my bank for more money!

i have just got word from a lady from the Employment Agency Standards who i contacted as i managed to cancel my "contract" within 7 days of payment, so now we are being re-funded the full money, they have agreed to send out a cheque on the 17th June.

The only reason that i was able to do this is because of reading everyones stories on this and a few other boards about MD! I cannot thank people enough for leaving their comments. If i had not read them, i would be none the wiser.

So big thank you to everyone
Best wishes

Ps i shall also be giving the investigator a link tot this page to see what she has to say.

The lesson everyone aspiring model has to learn... is do not pay any up-front fees; if you do then you stand little chance of work because the agent has no incentive to find you work; because they already have your money!

Remember agents are supposed to earn their money from commission after they have found you work; not before.

If you think paying money up-front will make your chances of getting work even better; then think again; it will not.

I get a huge amount of complaints where money is paid and no work ever materialized; yet the agent tells them some wonderful tale of their great opportunity of getting paid work; which is based on fiction; not fact...

A fool and their money are soon parted; if it looks too good to be true; it normally is!

I'd just like to say thankyou to everyone who has posted something on this topic! i was looking for representation and found models direct in the yellow pages i went through the motions and was accepted, i was prepared to pay as everything seemed so offical and i ignored all the signs that they may of been dodgy. luckly though as i was waiting for money to come into my account (which i would of then given to models direct) i typed their name into google and along with their website this site popped up once i read through it and realised there was 100's of people that had been ripped off by them i destroyed all the rubbish they had sent to me and now have no intention of ever having anything to do with them! I was so luckly that i didnt find out when it was all too late and i know alot of you have had your money taken and i really feel for you! To anyone considering joining their so called agency i warn you now as great and offical it may seem its not worth it. if something seems to good to be true it often is! It should be illegal but what they are doing is so sneaky they can get away with it. They will take your money and then never give you jobs and give the same old line that they will "put you forward when your look is called." because they take on everyone for their money the chances of you actually getting a job are slim if at all. Thanks people. x

We understand your anxiety in wondering if you have done 'the right thing' as the media gives regular coverage to questioning all agencies and there has been good cause to.

One thing most people do not realise is that the majority of companies who give rise to complaint are simply 'showcase outfits'.

By 'showcase', we mean they do not undertake to represent models for seeking paid work, instead they simply, make hollow claims to host people as available for 'agents and hirers to see'.

The difficulty is, new models do not realise this subtle difference and pay to sign up in the hope something will happen.

In reality, agents and hirers do not comb these showcase sights. When they want models - they turn to those agents who are proper agents and by that we mean, those reputable ones who are registered as Employment Agents.

Employment agent agencies who represent models, as Models Direct have done since 1990, are regulated and inspected by the following Government authorities, The Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Employment, as well as Office of Fair Trading, Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise.

There are strict inspections, accountability and severe penalties for default and failure to comply.

So you can see why 'showcase model agencies exist, in order to dodge the tight rules and regulations and laws governing Models Direct, as an authorised employment agency.

Models Direct has successfully represented and found work for the last eighteen years for many men, women and children in the film, advertising, fashion, catalogue and photographic industries and we continue to do so daily with our full time staff of seventeen professional bookers.

Why not move away from your computer and come and see us at our UK Head Office here in Norwich? Make an appointment with any of our Co ordinators and we will make you very welcome, showing you what we do and how we do it, for people like yourself.

This will clarify how Models Direct differs and demonstrate the facts behind modelling with us. See the names we supply models to, meet our team working everyday on behalf of our models, meet the directors who founded Models Direct in 1990, hear how we started and what we do and could do for you, see for yourself what we are all about.

Then decide, knowing the facts.

If you produce your travel ticket, or petrol receipt for your travel for your days visit, you will also go home with a contribution from us for half your travel costs.

That's our 50/50 offer, we'll help you to help yourself. Firstly to come and see us and thereafter, if you are successful in receiving an Offer of Model Management from us, throughout the time you are modelling with us.

Success is about commitment, your modelling is no different. Take us up on the invitation before deciding if modelling is really for you.

If it is, you are talking to the right people. We look forward to meeting you, we know commitment when we see it.

A message to models direct

Its ok you saying all of what I think is rubbish, but you have still charged people to what you call is a registration fee when reputable companies clearly don't.

I have been on your books for 18 months now and have NOT had a single job from you, I haven't even had a phone call just to keep me updated, yes I do get emails but that seems just a standard email you send everyone whether their profile has been looked at or not and as it was The Blue Rooms put you in contact with me after spending over £300 on on my portfolio even though it was on disc (which cost about £2!!!) it seems like you are joined in coning people out of their money.

I even sent you an email about my profile and you just sent one back saying please call us, thats ok except its an 0845 number, dont you think you have had enough money out of me and other people.

To anyone thinking of signing a contract with Models Direct.... DON'T

PLEASE BE WARY OF ANY POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT MODELS DIRECT! I have been looking at a couple of forums to find out what people think of Models Direct after my daughter was offered a place with them...some of the POSITIVE comments on different forums are identical. Read into this what you like, but it looks like a standard message which has been posted to get people to buy into believing that Models Direct are an OK company. It wouldn't be difficult for anyone working with Models Direct to log in to these sites and write good things about them just to get better press!

Note to Models Direct:
If you class yourselves as an Employment Agency, why should you differ to any other kind of Employment Angency. If I were to go for a job in ANY other field through a standard agency (Monster.co.uk, Reed, Office Angels, Randstad...) I do not have to pay them an admin fee! Why should modelling be any different? All other employment agencies make their money through the PLACEMENT of individuals in paid employment. Perhaps you should change your practice and you wouldn't have to be on sites such as this trying to defend yourselves! I am wondering how you became Europe's leading model agency? Do you perhaps offer a great rate to clients? Perhaps you can afford to do this by off-setting your costs with the money you take from potential models?!

There are lot of modeling scams about. I heard of one today that inform contestants that they are through to the next round, and that they need to pay £250 to enter the semi-final.
I would avoid any so called competition that requires a fee like that.

Models United Ltd are running Junior Face of '08, which is free to enter and you receive a free 6x4 print.
This is a totally genuine competition with monthly winners from each county getting a free 10x8 print. The winners of each category go through to the grand final in December and the overall category winners receive £50.

You can find full details on their web site
