hi, sometimes there poo can smell strongly of what they eat, its happened quite a lot with my daughter who is one. I have been advised though that your not to give fish to them untill they are 9 months, if you have been told different then no worries. Dont stress, as long as he is pooing well you know he is digesting his food. xxxxx Carly.

Hi you should try BABY FOODS first, things like baby rice and puree apple, the baby has a sensitive tummy and they need to get used to other foods.

Musswells, Do you mean 'baby-food' as in shop bought baby-food branded stuff? If so then I've been led to believe that this isn't strictly true. Think back to our parents, our grand parents etc Shop bought baby food wasn't around in the same way as it is now and they all coped and survived!

If he's already 6 months then you can give non-baby food much more than if you were weaning a younger baby. As long as the food is pureed enough for him (consistency will depend on his spitting reflexes, teeth, how long he's been weaning etc). I haven't given my lo any shop bought baby food until this week. I started her on a banana (whist chatting to a health visitor who knows what stage she's at) and a couple of days later melon, then went with Ready Brek with mashed banana, Weetabix, pureed apple, mango, home-made yoghurt, home-made 'baby' rice (why pay the extra-baby-premium when you're likely to have rice at home anyway?), and now she has ready-meals of whatever I've cooked for dh & I (minus the any salt and checking on salt content of sauces) pureed up and frozen in meal size portions. I've just bought a couple of the baby breakfast boxes to see what they were like, and quite frankly I think they taste horrible! I'll use them as my lo hasn't spat them out, but I won't be buying them again! I do keep a couple of jars in the cupboard for emergencies but as yet I've always remembered to cook a bit extra of our food so I have enough to puree up for her.

I agree with someone's comment on your other post (hope he's stopped crying btw!) that buying a baby-recipe book is a good plan as it gives you ideas of things to do. Annabel Karmel is a current popular one to have. I've got a book called 'What should I feed my baby? The complete nutritious guide from birth to two years' by Susannah Olivier.

The best advice that I've been given is not to give honey before 1 year old. Not to give peanuts before 3 years (this may be just if you or dp suffer any food allergies). And finally be guided by your lo. Watch him with whatever you're feeding him and see how he reacts.

Hi,

I think what Lorraine (muswells) was getting at was that she should be giving him more baby orientated stuff like fruit, veg, finger foods suitable for that age etc rather than fishfingers and chocolate rice crispy cakes.

I'm sure she didn't mean jarred baby food.

Yes Gemma that was what I meant but then I did put baby rice and fruit on the message I left but looks like Pele did not see that. I did not say anything about jars of baby food [Frowner] I was only trying to help. Feel a bit miffed now I have had two kids before so I should know what I am talking about. Oh well never mind.
THANK YOU GEMMA though hun. xx

Also Pele the fact that you did not like the baby food does not surprise me because you are used to foods where as baby is not. I did some foods myself for my first two and they also loved packets and jars. I will do the same for my baby when the time comes to wean him.

Lorraine & Gemma,

All I did was ask if that's what you (Lorraine) meant. Obviously you didn't so the reply doesn't apply, as such, to you. It certainly wasn't meant to say that your advice was wrong, just that 'baby food' (ie shop bought) isn't the only option.

Really didn't mean to offend so apologies if I did.

Hello

I noticed that Ready Brek was mentioned and you might to read this

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/404667.stm

(poor parents whose baby died because they fed him Ready Brek thinking it would be OK).

Very sad, but something to bear in mind.
