Hi ladies,

Thanks for your advice on the bras, found some really nice ones by Hot Milk but a bit too expensive for me. Maybe DP will treat me Wink

Sophie- hope you can build your supply back up hun. Are you sure your milk has dried up? It's just that at the beginning I thought I wasn't producing enough milk as Harriet was sucking for hours at a time. She was still gaining at least 1/2lb per week so I obviously was producing enough!!

Good luck x

Rusty

Hi Sophie

Just wanted to reiterate what Baby USA said about talking to a trained BF Counsellor (La Leche League if poss) as sometimes HV, Midwives and GP's aren't always trained / are sometimes misinformed / not supportive of BF (believe it or not!!). A girl who came to our group the other week had been told by her GP that BF beyond 14 days was a waste of time and much better to give formula as it was fortified. An absolute load of dangerous RUBBISH and really upset the girl who had initially struggled with BF but managed to get over her difficulties with proper support!!!

Good that your babs is latching on well. A few other Q's for you... Are you offering both breasts in the same feed? Have you tried skin to skin contact? This really helpd me get BF established. Are you feeding in a busy room with lots going on (ie: is he getting distracted?) Any other reason you can think he gets fussy after 10 mins?

Good luck - hope you find some support locally to you!

Def sounds like your HV is not that well informed. Milk does not just dry up like that-try to avoid giving top ups of formula if you can as it sounds like a growth spurt so your body needs to work at producing more milk-again,I will be back later but Laura is giving you great advice Smiler

only feed in a quite room, but have not tried skin to skin contact will do this.

Hi Sophie

My local group is organised through Sure Start (now called Children Centres) so if you have a sure start (or equivalent in your local area you could try there. Also you might have a la Leche group in your area - try their website.

http://www.laleche.org.uk/pages/groups/groups.htm

What you will hopefully find at a group is positive support and encouragement about bf and practical advice. Someone can also check that he is definitely latching on properly and feeding effectively. It's difficult to tell without seeing you but it might be something as simple as the way you are holding him and a different position might help him feed more effectively. (have you tried diffent positions?)

Hope you can find some solutions so you can continue...it really is so rewarding once you overcome the initial problems. (and apart from anything else... CHEAPER than buying formula all the time!)

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to the girls on this thread - you don't know it but you have been a massive help in my hour of need! DH and I have been agonising over whether we should switch to formula as we really have struggled with BF - and I did think I wasn't producing enough - but the links you've added and the advice you've given have reallyu rged us to keep at it. i am so tired and struggling to keep up with my LO's demanding feeding pattern but he is at the right age for a growth spurt so I should only have to deal with it for another few days and then hopefully my supply will have caught up for him.

Good advice re the oatmeal etc - just had a bowel now while reading and replying and a nice cup of tea. feel ready to face the next feed now!

Thanks again girls - bumping you up for others in my situation!

You are more than welcome-growth spurts are awful but they do pass-just offer the breast more frequently and you will be rewarded-it doesn't mean you will be feeding more often forever-in fact you may find once the growth spurt is over your LO is much more settled (until the next growth spurt of course)!!
