Well, at Lorraine's suggestion here is a separate thread for anyone wanting breastfeeding advice. Please remember I am in the US time zone so I'm not likely to reply early in the morning Uk time!!!

Good for you hun - I know that for me six months was my max as far as bf was concerned, but maybe with some more help/advice I could've continued. Who knows!!

Lots of love

Hi!

Fleur has a main feed first thing in the morning, i bring her back to bed and have a 10min lye down with her while she feeds.

Also come 4ish in the afternoon she asks for some, but normal just a top up and not a long feed.

Other wise she has water and cows milk.

Cows milk at 7:30pm, bed at 8pm and straight to sleep and right through till 6:30-7:30ish am.

How about you?
How does Liberty ask for milk? as i find Fleur tugs at my top until i say something and then she nods.

I did some baby signing with Libertyu at 9 months and she uses the sign for milk which is a squeezing motion with her hand-it is really cute, it is also usually accompanied with a serious nod of the head! She feeds first thing a little, then usually after an hour or so of being awake and then I try to feed her at around 10am before I go to work. While I am at work she will sometimes drink a little chocolate milk!! Then I feed her when I finish at around 4.30 and then a couple more times before the big bedtime feed. At the moment she is waking every 4 hours in the night as she is getting more teeth again Frowner Poor thing really suffers with her teeth-I wish she was like the boys in that respect as they breezed through teething!
Her feeds generally last around 2 mins one side only, unless she is tired when she will linger for a little longer so although hse feeds alot of times still it really takes very little time. The funniest thing is when I feed her I can ask her if she is done yet and she will either let go or shake her head!!!

helloo...me again!!! LOL

quick question - have started to express a bit so dh can give bethany a feed before bed and i can have an early night - no probs with bottle BUT i wondered whether you thought i had enough milk...been expressing in the morning and first expressing off opposite side to that which i fed off last and then ..going to other side to get some extra - then..even go back to first side ...
but all am getting after quite a while is 3 oz...? does that sound ok? gave first bottle to bethnay last night and she gobbled it all down...felt bad there wasnt any more to give.

should i add to expressed milk throughout the day to make it more??

sorry - hope this makes sense..xxx

Sarah, 3oz is a great amount for a bf baby. Breast milk is more concentrated than formula so you don't need a lot of it. It can be disconcerting to see your baby 'gobble' down 3oz, but a lot of the time it's a misconception and more about the mechanics of sucking on the bottle vs the breast that create that impression.

My usual rule of thumb used to be an oz an hour (ie if I'm gone 3 hours then 3oz should be a good amount for her to get while exclusively bfing).

Also you have to make sure that you are using a nipple for a newborn (ie very slow flow) to mimic how milk comes out the breast otherwise your baby might end up with a bottle preference and that's no fun trying to overcome. That is true throughout your bfing experience (ie don't change to a faster nipple even though your baby is older).
