my 8-week old daughter has a 'Strawberry Naevus', also called a strawberry mark, on her head. It's like a birthmark and does look a lot like a strawberry! The doctor said it's harmless and they usually go away by the time children are 5 or so, tho can take longer. It has grown a bit and is quite 'swollen'. It is not in a bad place, when her hair will grow it should be covered, and apparently it is harmless tho it can bleed and i am worried about it getting scratched or infected.
I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this as i don't know of anyone that had one. What age about have they gone away if they did? Is there any treatment, such as laser surgery, if they don't? Or any topical treatments?
My DS has one on his leg and it is starting to disappear. It does grow with them though and i remember thinking at one point that it was going to burst as it looked really swollen.
When I spoke to the doctor about it he was really reassuring and said that it definitely doesnt do them any harm and that it probably would bleed if it had a bad knock but just to apply pressure to it and it would stop after 5-10 mins. Thankfully it has been fine so far.
As I say Damiens is starting to fade but it has taken a good year to see any difference at all. Nowthat it has started to disappear though it is going really fast.
My son had one on the side of his body, again if it gets knocked and bleeds just apply pressure. He is 9 years old now and it has pretty much faded, you can kind of see where it used to be the area is just a little darker beige colour and it is flat, not raised like the origainal birth mark. He was aware of his birth mark but accepted it and was never embarassed by it even when other children pointed at it. Hope that helps Heidi xxx
My baby girl has 2. A big one on her tummy and a smaller one on her right calf. I was told by my hv that if they hadn't gone by the time that she was 4/5 then they probably wouldn't go. As far as I know they can be removed but that decision will be made by Scarlett when she's old enough, it's up to her.

one is generally reffered to as an angels kiss or something and was between her eyebrows- I rarely notice this now unless she is having a paddy! (gets brighter!) another small one of the same type on her head which you can't see because of her hair
and one on her thigh which was very dark at birth, almost purply - I was told this one might not fade, but it is a paler pinky now - some days I can barely see it, some it is obvious so I think it will fade with time... this has grown with her
None of hers are raised or swollen so don't know if that was much help!

Hello Jake has a cavernous haemangioma on his back. It started as a tiny red pinprick when he was about a month old and increased in size incredibly rapidly 'til it was about 4cm across and a great big bright red raised lump with masses of blue bits going deeper into the skin. We noticed that it started to shrink a few months ago... prob when he was about 9 months old... and it is now a fraction of the size and not raised very much at all now. We were never given much advice. Luckily hes never knocked it so we've not any probs.

Seems they're quite common!! My little munchkin has a little strawberry on the back of her heel which has been slowly slowly fading over the past year, although you can still see it. Like the others, I was told by my HV that it should fade by the time she's 4/5 and if not then discuss options with my doc if I wanted to. I was also told not to worry about it as it doesn't do any harm at all.
thanks for the many replies! Yes it seems they're more common than i had realised! Thanks for the advice re: applying pressure if they ever do get knocked and bleed.
It seems that most of you are lucky and the marks have started to fade quite soon, that is really reassuring! I know it's not serious, but you always worry don't you. Sounds like all your babies are lucky to have them fade!
Peanut- the angel's kiss sounds really romantic! And funny it gets brighter when she's angry! SarahW- how interesting your daughter has the same one as you! Summer1971- you little boy's one sounds a bit scary, glad it has gone down!
