i am a breastfeeding mum with a 25 wk old baby boy. Breastfeeding should satisfy your 9 wk old she will still be feeding on demand. Dont mix your milk but you could try giving her a formula bottle instead of breast once a day to give your breasts a chance to fill properly. I have done this it's hard at first though. have you tried giving boiled water or juice ?

Hi Joanne, Giving one formula feed instead of a breast feed worked well for a friend of mine. If you are breastfeeding on demand your baby should be getting plenty as your breasts will supply according to the demand. I don't think you are supposed to give them juice at that age.

Hi Joanne, you can mix the two of course, just make enough formula (according to instructions for half the usual amount and add the breast milk) however I fould that when I breastfed my extremely hungry son that a routine worked very well for him, instead of feeding on demand. He did settle into the EASY routine by Tracy Hogg very well and after about 10-12 weeks I substituted the evening breast with a bottle. That way he slept better through the night. I would then express the milk. Formula is very rich so it is definitely advisable to try a small amount during the day to see how your baby takes it. Babies all have their own preferences as to which formula they take to. And you dont want them to have a tummy ache at night. If you can stick to breast as long as possible it is better for them and it should satisfy them as long as you eat well and drink a pint of water with each feed so that you "restock". I got this tip from my doctor and it definitely helped. I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies.I have given my daughter a formular bottle at night and she slept for 4 hours which is a first. Also she now has all milk via bottles i will express morning and night and she is now sleeping between feeds for 2-3 hours.I really wanted to keep feeding her myself but she was crying after feeds and not sleeping so changing the way im feeding her has helped. I do have a concern though since introducing a formular feed she has not solied a nappie in over 24 hours.

Hi again, you may find that formula can be a bit constipating. If the problem persists you need to change formula and have a chat with your GP. They usually recommend lactilose which is made from lactose and helps digestion.

Hi there, it sounds like your baby isn't getting the hind milk when your breastfeeding, 5-10 minutes of feeding will only supply foremilk which isn't very satisfying, you need to try to keep feeding for 20-25 minutes, I only know this through my own experience. If you can't keep your baby awake at first try a wet cloth. I've never heard of mixing breast and formula milk in a bottle but certainly try one formula feed and keep breastfeeding the rest of the time, good luck!
