Hiya ladies just looking for an answer to my question here!! We are currently thinking about when would be the best time to try for another baby. We thought we would wait until the end of next year and then think about it again.

However, im not thinking it maybe better if im off on maternity leave with no 2 once Ellie is going to school nursery. How old will she be when she goes to nursery? Will it be the September before her 4th birthday?

Thanks x x

Hiya Vicky

My friends little girl goes to nursery now for half a day. She turned 3 in April & started nursery in September. It'll prob work out nice that Ellie has a little brother or sister around that time & also for you cos you'll get to spend half the day with the new born then when Ellie is home she'll be old enough to help out a little bit won't she then neither of them will feel left out.

You aren't the only ones having the baby no.2 talk, OH is going on about it all the time now & is wanting to try beginning of next year but I keep saying I'm not ready yet, maybe towards the end of the year. He keeps telling people we are having no.2 next year! Who knows we could be on the due in.. thread together again, we'll see!

hi..
i am a nursery teacher in a school and generally (although it varies from area to area and school to school) you start after 3rd birthday. My nursery is alwasy full up so sometimes a waiting list...others you can start straight after birthday.
Usually intakes are at septemeber and january but some schools allow kids to start mid year..
hope that is helpful..xxx

Hi Sarah thanks for that. Because Ellie was born Nov she will go the following September won't she? I think our school only does one intake in September but will need to confirm that.

Oh just looking at your ticker, Ellies got that dress aswell!!!

Thanks again x

Hi Vicky - glad you sound so well my dear! I understood that you could start most nirseries at any time but the place only became govm funded from the term after 3rd bday - which would mean the Jan after Ellie's 3rd bday. But as Sarah says - it veries from area to area. Round here to have to book kids in from birth to get the preschool of choice its madness!!

The only thing I would say, as a childminder I've looked after lots of different aged children in my time and I have found it a real fag having to do a 12pm pick up when you have a young baby - as they are nearly always wanting to be fed and/or asleep just as you need to do the nursery pick up! But you're area might do 3.30pm pick up don't know...consider the logistics of picking up times as well as psychologically when is a good time to have siblings. If you don't want to wait another 2 years then don't - have no 2 before Ellie starts nursery - sometimes a narrow age gap works brilliantly. When I was a teacher I didn't send DS to nursery as I didn't want him to be too tired and overstimulated when I got home from work as I wanted to have some time with him myself - they don't get to daytime nap so much in preschool so I kept him with a childminder as I wanted him to sleep alot during the day so he would stay up with me a bit at night!

It all depends on your future plans my dear - would you work with 2 kids? Will you go on and have a 3rd?

Good luck!

I've just been looking into this so the info is quite fresh in my mind!!!

It really depends when you think she'll be ready to start pre-school and when you can get a place for her. Like Sarah said, most start after their third birthday, although some pre-schools will take children in the term before their third birthday and with yours being a November birthday, you might want to think about her starting in the September before she's three, if the school will take her and if you think she's ready.

It also depends on where you live how long the waiting lists for pre-schools in your area are, particularly if you want to choose the pre-school she goes to rather than just seeing if the local one to you has places.

I live in the outskirts of London, so our situation is slightly different as pre-schools where I live are just so totally oversubscribed - My DD is 11 months and I've had to put her on the waiting list for pre-schools in my area now!!!!! Ridiculous, isn't it!!!! Don't let that panic you, though, as London is generally a daft place to live when it comes to your child's education. Wink

The government funds a certain amount of pre-school (I think they fund 4 sessions a week???) and this funding kicks in the term after you turn 3. So, if she's a november birthday, she would get government funding from the january after she turns three, if you wanted her to start then. Hope I haven't confused you!!!!

Loocy xx

I've worked in a school nursery/state nursery and loads of mums have babies around that age, seems a really nice age for the child, as they understand, but mum has time with new baby while child 2 is at nursery!

Good luck! Smiler

Hello Smiler

Daisy was already at nursery and went up to the pre-school room shortly before she turned 3 (1st July). Funding kicked in in Sept and she goes 2 full days per week... so we get 4 sessions paid for and have to fill in the gaps ourselves.
Funding pays for 5 sessions per week, so we could have had her in for another morning or afternoon but its too tricky for me to get there part way through the day (dh takes her and picks her up normally), plus our nursery is chock full and wouldn't have had space for her on another day.

Sorry about the essay!

Hiya ladies thanks so much for all your responses its certainly given us something to think about. My reason for wanting baby no 2 when Ellie goes to nursery is for her too! I want to be there to take her to nursery and don’t want to rely on MIL to take her as we live in the next village. Im thinking by the time she goes to full time school I will be returning to work and will be able to fit my hours around her schooling and my mum or MIL will look after the new baby when I go back.
I have had her name down at the nursery and school since she was about 6 months old but they never sent out any info re intakes.

Ever, thanks for your info its really opened my eyes never considered a new babies routine or anything!!! I will have to return as I need to put food on the table! David earns a lot but weve bought a new house this year and doubled our mortgage just as I halved my hours!!! Hes fine with bills etc but I have to provide food!!! I thought about possibly evening work in a supermarket or something but I really enjoy my work and its so flexible and the other thing is I get more than double an hour what id get at a supermarket. AND would I really feel like going to work after looking after 2 kids all day? I don’t think we will have a 3rd tbh our house is big enough for about 4 kids but I don’t think id cope with 4!!

Loocy, thanks for your info too!!! If they would take her Jan after her 3rd birthday that would be good cos it means we don’t have to wait as long for no2. Im going to have to ring up the school and find out when she would be taken.

Thanks Kia, Summer, Faiza, Laura and Kelly for all your advice. Its seems to vary from place to place doesn’t it really. Right I am going to ring the school tomorrow and ask the question!!! Arrrggghhh I never thought there would be some many factors to thinking about another baby!!! If I didn’t have to work I don’t think this would be so much of a problem!!!
