Hi - is there anyone out there who has become pregnant whilst using the Mirena coil? or anyone who knows anyone who this has happened to? I sometimes feel like such a freak.
Coil had been in for 2 yrs and 2 months when the pregnancy occurred.
Would be so interested to hear from anyone else in similar situation. Thanks.

No you're not a freak!! It didn't happen to me but my friend has just discovered she is pg with no 3 in these cir****tances. It turned out that the coil had moved (not sure exactly where to!!) and as a result she fell pg. Also, years ago when I had dd no1, a girl in my anti-natal was pg and had had a mirena, and when the baby was born it came out wrapped in the baby's hair!!
So - anything's possible!!
Take care Ali

I already had 3 children, always wanted 4, but my husband didn't. Therefore, I had the Mirena put in, thinking I was safe as houses.
Yes, I had become pregnant, had lots of weird symptoms for weeks and weeks and SO much pain.
Unfortunately however, the pregnancy was found to be ectopic and I lost my baby through surgery at approx 9 weeks, plus my left fallopian tube as the pregnancy was too far advanced to remove the foetus without damage to the tube also.
Devastated to say the least, and very, very shocked, having been told repeatedly by the medical profession just how safe this this was.
However, on the plus side, this shock pregnancy and then loss caused so much mental anguish, that it caused my husband to come round and feel ok about us trying one last time for a last baby.
Very shortly after losing the ectopic pregnancy, I became pregnant again, and now have my very much wanted 4 children, girl, boy, boy, girl - and am now a very happy and contented soul.
Thank you for your reply, it has made me feel a little better, there are so few pregnancies, relatively, while using this coil, that it has made me feel rather like a freak as I said.
Bye for now C

I had the mirena coil fitted 6 weeks ago, one week after my period had ended. The doctor told me it was safe to have sex straight away, but now all the info I'm finding says practise safe sex for 7 days after! I've not had any issues since it was fitted but then I've not had any bleeding other than the mildest spotting, and my boobs are bigger. I'm getting a lot of lower back pain, and some dizziness. Not to mention peeing every five minutes (as a teacher this is a nightmare). I did a PG test yesterday and it was negative, but I'm still a little worried. I know I'm probably over reacting but any advice would be fab. My partner and I have only been together for 4 months and although we've discussed children, this isn't quite what I'd had in mind, and with all the other horror stories I've read here about the Mirena coil I'd really like to put my mind at rest.
thanks guys

Hi there My Mirena had been in for 2 yrs, 2 months as you may have already read, when the pregnancy occurred. I began to feel extremely tired, really exhausted, my boobs were sore, and then I began needing to pee a lot more often as you said. However, to do so was becoming more and more excruciating as the days/weeks went on.
Because I had been fitted with the Mirena, not just any old coil - AND had been told that basically there was no way I would ever become pregnant whilst using the thing, the last thing on my mind was pregnancy, which is why it took me so long to go and have anything done about all these odd symptoms. I had had 3 children, healthy pregnancies, prior to this happening, and although I did have symptoms typical of pregnancy, it never felt 'right', or quite the same, and so with those two factors against it, I didn't ever suspect that I might be.
I presumed that perhaps the Mirena had become somehow dislodged - and that that was what was giving me all this one sided, needle like pain or that I had an infection, maybe a UTI. I didn't even do a pregnancy test, I had been told repeatedly when the coil was put in that pregnancy would never be an issue. How wrong was that.
Went to Fam Planning clinic late one night, as a friend worked there got me an emergency appt. Theydidn't test for preg either (as I was using the Mirena), but gave me antibiotics to try and clear what they thought might be an infection. A week later, pain still excruciating low down on one side, some breakthrough bleeding also, along with brown 'old' blood, and it was starting to worry me a fair bit so went to my GP - I thought there may even be the possibility of Cancer of the ovary as my own mum died of that when she was 39, and it can be hereditary. Did a Ca 125 blood test to try and rule that possiblity out, but my GP also requested I put in a preg test (just to humour her she said - as I was using the Mirena, and that it wouldn't come back positive)!
Thank goodness she did, because the following day, she phoned me at home telling me it was very positive and to come in immediately. Anyway, after emergency trips/appts at the Early Prob Preg Clinic, ultrasounds and HcG blood tests, an ectopic was diagnosed and I was rushed off to theatre for emergency surgery. Was found to be around 9.5 weeks pregnant, the fetus had begun to infiltrate the fallopian tube wall, which a day or two more, would have lead to rupture.
Therefore, please, if anyone has symptoms such as these, please go and get checked out, as soon as you can.

Thank you CT, I appreciate your frankness. After writing the earlier post, I rang my practice and spoke to the nurse. On her advice I've made an appointment to see my GP tomorrow, so I've my fingers crossed that it's just this evil contraceptive at work. Much as I would love a baby, and I know my partner is ready too, we're still enjoying that first rush and I wouldn't want to lose that just yet, and as I've just started my teaching career it's just not the right time for us.
thanks again and take care

Hi again That's ok, no prob, would feel negligent really if I didn't reply, would HATE to think of anybody else going through all that we did (it was back in 2003), but still very fresh in my mind.
The thing (I am sure you are aware of already) with the Mirena is, that it is SO good at preventing pregnancy, probably the best in all honesty - (even after what we went through), BUT, if it does go wrong, and a pregnancy miraculously occurs, then it is much more likely to be ectopic - which is a big worry.
Best of luck - I will be keeping my fingers crossed tightly for you. Caroline

Thanks caroline. If it wasn't for those first seven days I wouldn't be that bothered at all to be honest. I'm not sure why the gp said that it would be effective immediately, but then we do tend to trust what they say. I've looked at loads of sites for it today and they all say to have protected sex for seven days after insertion, hence my minor panic. I'm sure it will be grand, but we have a long family history of problem pregnancies so it's back to the Doc's to put my mind at rest. I'll pop by tomorrow and let you know how I got on.

Well I saw the Doc last night and it wasn't overly helpful.
She's given me antibiotics as she thinks the peeing every five minutes is due to an infection, but none of the symptoms could possibly be conncected to the mirena. No, no, no. Not at all.
She asked me was I pregnant, and I just looked at her. My comment was "you're the Doctor, you tell me!" I mean I've never been pregnant or even suspected it before so how they hell would I know?
Basically she's taken a urine sample and sent it off and she did a home PG test then and there. It was negative, but she said that if the sypmtoms still persist in a fortnight then I need to come back for blood tests as ectopics don't always show up in a urine test.
So I'm less worried, but still not 100% happy. thanks for your comments though. I do appreciate it guys.

Hi Kel Was just thinking about you when your mail came in - you must be thinking I do nothing but sit on here!!!! I am a Reg.childminder, home based, and our computer is in the room where I work with all my small children, and it it always switched on!
Anyway, I am so glad you have had your GP appt - I'm sure you will not be pregnant, but please, please do keep on top of this, look up and digest thoroughly (if you haven't done so already of course) all the many, typical symptoms of ectopic - and then, if the worst comes to the worst (which I'm sure it won't) then you will know to act quickly, lessening the danger to you concerning rupture etc.
Have a quick look on the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust site, they are equipped with a huge amount of advice, medical and for emotional support if it ever becomes necessary. Their forums are extensive.
Sure you won't need to do so though Kel, keep in touch if you want to, and if not, I wish you all the best. Thanks, Caroline x

Thanks for the info pet. I wasn't thinking that at all. You must be thinking something similar about me! I'm a teacher in a middle school and while children are doing tests (and we're doing lots at the mo) I can only walk around the room so many times before I wind them up totally.
Actually my best mate is a midwife and she's been far better than the GP. she's given me loads of advice and is monitoring me on the sly. It should be fine though.
thanks guys
See you soon. k xxx
