Hello,

I am 6weeks pregnant. I have now had my second reminder for a smear. Is it safe to have one during pregnancy. I suppose I should ring the doctors but a very close friend of mine works there and as I have not told anyone, I am a bit reluctant to do this.

Hi there

Congrats on being PG.

My midwife mentioned having a smear test done after the pregnancy, which unfortunately for me has been delayed because of post delivery problems and it would hurt too much down there at the moment to do it. Ive actually just received a letter last week. GP told me they put a block on the letters when you are pregnant but that they would start coming out again now.

I dont know what to suggest about the fact that your friend works there, but thats the way I was told the system works. As for your friend working there, same kinda thing happened to me when I went in to be induced. A girl Ive known since I was tiny was on duty - anyhow in the end I was soooooooooo happy she was about when it all went pear shaped I quickly got past the whole her seeing me at my worst type thing. Anyhow, Ill stop rabbiting on and get to bed while baby is sleeping.

When I saw the midwife at 9 weeks she told me smears are conducted after baby is born, not during pregnancy. Could you ring reception at your surgery and ask to speak to a nurse or your GP about your smear? (If you have nurses at your surgery). You wouldn't have to give details to the receptionist about exactly why you are calling, just you would like to talk to someone about it as you have a concern. Then you can explain. Just a thought...

I believe they don't do smears in pregnancy as there is a risk that of miscarriage, I am sure I read that somewhere or was told that. i had to have mine after baby was born. I am on my third pregnancy and think I am due a smear soon, but they won't do it now till after the baby is born.

The doctors surgery can advise

Hi Chele

I was due a smear test this year but being pregnant at the time meant that I couldn't have it done, midwife who booked me in at 12week appt put it in my notes that I've to get one done 3 months after birth of baby, so I would agree with comments on here about it not being done during pregnancy.

As for friend working at doctors practice, she will have signed confidentiality agreement, so relax, your health and baby's health are v important so don't put off going to doctors just cause of that.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

just mention it to the midwife at your booking in appointment. I dont think they do them through pregnancy but at least if you mention it she can put your mind at rest.

Good luck with the pregnancy!
