Hello I am new to this site. I already have 6yr old daughter and 7 month old son. I had Mirena coil fitted in Aug. I have been feeling sick and tender chest and feel like I am pregnant, can I be? Done preg test last Wed which was negative. Has any one else had mirena coil in and had symptoms of pregnancy if so I will have it taken out cant stand this. Thanks
Nausea and breast tenderness are both fairly common side effects of the Mirena coil, esp in the first 6 months, so I think this is probably what it is.
The chances of getting pregnant with the Mirena in place are tiny, just 1 in 1000 (compared to 10 in 1000 with the pill, 20 in 1000 with the copper coil etc). That said, the Mirena CAN come out during a heavy period, which would obviously put you at risk of pregnancy.
Check that you can feel the strings and if so, it's very unlikely you're pregnant. You could always do another test in a couple of weeks to make sure. If you can't feel the strings, make an appointment at your FPC to have everything checked out.
I'd think very carefully about having it removed though. Most side effects should only last a maximum of 6 months, so it might at least be worth sticking it out until 6 months have gone. Secondly, it is the most effective method of contraception by quite a long way, so if you really don't want children again yet it's probably your best option
Thanks for your reply. I had the mirena coil both before my daughter and my son and never felt like this. My only worry is that when the doctor fitted it I wasn't on a period and she told me it was affective straight away but on reading up I have heard you are supposed to use other protection for the first week of fitting. Mind you I suppose if this was the case the pregnancy test would show positive by now? Thanks again.
If you don't have it fitted during your period you should use another method for one week, so your doctor gave you incorrect information (if I were you I'd mention this at your next appointment as it's not acceptable).
But, if you were pregnant because of this, you'd be at least 2 months pregnant by now, which as you said would show up in a test. Also, though it's possible to get pregnant in the first week it's still very unlikely.
I think if I were you I'd give it another 2 weeks or so then do another test. Or, if you're really worried see a doctor (and might I be so bold as to suggest you see a different doctor to the one who fitted it! lol) I think it's unlikely you're pregnant, but it might be worth having everything checked out even if it's just to put your mind at rest.
