You should go to antenatal classes at some stage towards the end of your pregnancy. The hospital looking after you should have classes. A midwife will talk you through all the options and give you some idea what to expect - the idea of giving birth is terrifying at any age! Don't worry, you'll be fine. If you have had complications in your pregnancy you may not have the option of a water birth, discuss it with your doctor. Best of luck.

I promise whatever options you choose now will be completely different when you go into labour as each is different. Try and find out abut everything and then once in labour you will know what is best for you. I wanted a water birth bit my baby was 12 days late and this wasnt an option for me-in the end i was glad! i had an epidural and had a great labour. it was my first baby but i didnt feel a thing and could push fine. the nurses will help and advise you so you wont be in your own. Good luck, im sure you will be a brilliant mum as you already have the sense to look at your options and ask for help-good luck!!

One thing I'd like to add is don't decide too early.... I had my first baby 7 months ago now, but it's all fresh in my memory. I had an epidural as soon as I went up to the labour ward so only experienced mild contractions at the beginning, and when the epidural wore off. I now wish I'd waited until I REALLY wanted it - so like the others said, look at all your options beforehand, then decide once you're there and feeling the labour. I have friends who got to 9cm dilated with hardly any pain!! (But I've a feeling they are abnormal). Best of luck and don't worry, it's SOOO worth it in the end....

i had my first child at 16 yrs old,i was against pain medication and didn't want it to make me feel out of it so i hired a tens machine (ask your midwife) it didn't help much.the gas and air is good if you only use it in the later stages. I had my second child five months ago and used a birthin or exercise ball which was a god send and a warm bath took alot of pressure out of the contractions.
