Hiya Mireille

Pubis Symphasis Disfunction!!! I cant spell it either. If its the same as what I had, my midwife described it like this, its the softening of the ligaments that hold the 3 parts of your pelvis together. They soften due to hormone changes (like everything else)to allow your baby to pass through during delivery. I suffered quite bad with it, to the point were my pelvis was clicking when I walked and I could'nt turn over when lying down, saying that , I did have a big baby. Strange but true, she said imagine your pelvis is like a coconut ring biscuit, you can't put pressure just on one area, as it will affect the other side and break in two halves (not that your pelvis will!) and that is what causes the pain both back and front.

I don't know if I've made any sense here, but I hope it helps.
You are a brave lady having four children, I admire you. I would love four children, but I can just cope now with two!!

Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy, let us know how you get on.
Take care

Debbie x

what is symphasis pubis dysfunction?

hormones present during pregnancy cause the ligaments in the body to soften and stretch, this in turn, causes the Symphasis Pubis (a ligament connecting the bones at the bottom front of the pelvic floor) to weaken. The increasing weight of the growing baby in the womb causes more and more pain.

The pain can be felt when walking, turning over in bed, in the areas of the groin, lower abdomen and inner thigh. An Ultrasound scan can confirm and diagnose the degree of the condition.

Treatment includes GP prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. A physiotherapist can suggest exercises to help ease the pain and may suggest the use of a special corset type belt or Tubigrip to help support the pelvis.

If anyone suspects they may be suffering from this condition it is important to seek advice from your GP as the delivery of the baby can be more difficult if it is left undiagnosed, for instance, spreading the legs will be incredibly painful. I has this problem in both my pregnancies, the first one from about 5 months and the second time it started before I'd even had a positive pregnancy test.
Again I had big babies, it was painful to walk, I couldn't sleep on my side or turn over in bed. I had a support belt but found the best thing was a tubigrip right round my bump and over my hips fitted quite tight. It held everything together if that makes sense. I had a bit of physio but theres only so much they can do when you are pregnant.
The good thing is that as soon as the babies were out the problem stopped, it is hard when you've got older kids too because you are so limited in your movement. Good luck.
