Hi all,

Congratulations to everyone. I'm not pregnant or even trying, I have 2 boys aged 4 years and 22 months and thats enough for me at the moment. I just wanted to advise on the nuchal translucency scan which was mentioned earlier in the thread.

I was 20 when my first son was born and had this scan because there's a history of spina bifida and hydro-caphalis with my maternal grandmother's babys. Because I live near London I didn't pay for the test and went to Kings College hospital.

With my first son it was fine, very reassuring and made my pregnancy worry free and enjoyable. With my second son they found a high amount of fluid at the back of the neck which increased the risk of downs and brain/spine problems from a very low risk (based on my age), to a risk of 1 in 400. I was then offered an amnio (where they put a needle in and extract some fluid around the baby) for more conclusive results but I turned it down as there is a risk of miscarriage.

I had another scan at kings at about 18 weeks which found everything seemed normal but I still couldn't help worrying. It wasn't until Danny was in my arms that I could relax. I know that if there's a next time I won't go for this scan. Unless you're certain that you could abort a baby with problems then it's not worth the worry if this 'technology' does pick up something which could be nothing.

Hope this helps!!!!

Jessica

Hello Everyone!

Sutherjess thanks for your reply on the nuchal translucency scan this has now confirmed the conclusion that me and DP had more or less come to anyway and that is just to stick with the normal scans and blood tests. There's no history of spina bifida or anything within the family and I don't think 33 is all that old either [Wink].

Al - Now I come to think of it I have been having cravings of sorts I suppose the main one being cartons of orange juice - good job they're on offer in the supermarket at the moment - lol!
I've also been on the babycentre website too and this is the dates I'm going with at the moment i.e. 6+4 today and due on the 7th October. No doubt the hospital will tell me different when I eventually go for my scan.

DP was saying to me last night perhaps it's just us but doesn't everything seem to be baby related at the moment whether it's an add on TV or the page you open a newspaper at. For me personally one or two friends are getting a little too close to the bone with their totally innocent remarks - can't wait to be 12 wks and then I can share my news x

CONGRATULATIONS Katie,

It is so hard keeping this to yourself isn't it, but at least we have each other to chat to! Have you been given your scan date yet? I imagine your Mum was over the moon when you told her. I can't wait to tell my family. How are you feeling?

I hope everyone is well.

Congratulations Katie and welcome to the club.

Have to confess I had a bit of a mare yesterday when I suddenly decided I wasn't really pregnant. Think this is just a hormonal thing and too much analysing on my part.

Yesterday I didn't seem to have any symptoms at all - not even wind. I haven't had many symptoms at all so far so I'm becoming very anxious now. Boobs don't seem to have changed or feel different at all. Haven't felt the need to go to the loo more often but this could be because I don't drink an awful lot and generally feeling fine.

Probably total over-reaction on my part seeing as I've had no pain or bleeding but is there a possibility I could have miscarried? Please any reassurance you can give would be appreciated feel like I've lost it [Frowner] xx

Hi to you both! And congrstulations to you to.

Alex, try not to panic, I haven't been having many symptons at all either. As long as theres no blood I think we should just count ourselves lucky to not be suffering like some people do! I know its hard though and I agree with the hormones thing, most of the time I am so happy and excited then just like that I get down and I think something awful is bound to happen!

Speak to you soon

Katie

Alex,

Don't worry, everything is fine, as long as you are not in pain and there is no bleeding (even then it doesn't always mean something is wrong). I know it is really distressing, but honestly hon, if you are really worried, go to the doctors, hey at least you might get an early scan which will really put your mind at rest. I think everyone goes throught this because it means so much to us!! Oh my god we are going to be like this for the next 7 and so months..........

If you need to chat let us know.

hi everyone, great to read about what everyone is going through, especially since most of us haven't told anybody yet, at least we can share our experiences here! 6 weeks pg, first pregnancy so excited and worried at the same time. I've been getting the same "So, when are you two finally geting one of your own...", I think they've given up on us already so looking forward to everyones reaction. Can't get enough of pregnancy websites, making my head spin at this stage! Have my first appointment with doc on Monday, still hasn't sunk in yet ! Symtoms so far are sore breasts (and larger) and slight cramps about a week ago but have faded away.

I read somewhere that we should be staying away from diet drinks and any drinks containing saccarin ? Can anybody confirm that ? Normally, I live on diet coke but haven't touched it in a while !

Morning Everyone.

I hope everyone is ok. I have'nt really had any symptoms either except for feeling tired. I don't feel pregnant at the moment! My dear husband has kindly pointed out that my hips have become wider, this is probably due to the choccies rather than my pregnancy!

I'm not really sure about diet drinks, but I suppose it's best to avoid them until you are sure.

I too have told my mum about my bean. She is so excited, I think she will burst if she can't tell someone soon.

Has anyone told their employers yet? I feel really nervous. In my team of six there are two off on maternity leave ond due in April and now me! (There must be something in the water!)

Take care everyone x[Wink]

Hi Al, Isobelle and Katie and welcome to smbumblebee.

Well what a difference a day makes here's me moaning on yesterday about lack of symptoms only to have been up every couple of hours in the night, feeling generally yuck and this morning after managing to drag myself into work feel so tired I can hardly keep my eyes open. Would given anything to shout out "look I'm pregnant - give a girl a break would you" [Wink] but I know that I won't be doing this for a while yet.

How's everyone else doing anything planned for the weekend - we're going to Amsterdam for the weekend so if the ferry crossing doesn't get me I'm sure the morning sickness will [Razzer].

Hi All

Congratulations to you all. I am currently 6 weeks with my second. As with the first I have had no sickness and no swelling boobs - infact I must be one of the only people who's boobs stay the same size throughout, so don't worry if you don't have any symptoms. The policy in my area last time was that no dating scans were offered unless you were unsure of your dates, so this time I popped into my local midwife drop in clinc and requested that I have one, as my daughter was 4 1/2 weeks early, but came out of hosptital within 2 weeks, I wondered if whether the dating was wrong. Now apparently new policy in my area is that if you having the blood test (triple test) then you can have the dating scan and its now free which I had to pay for last time. So thats good, so if you haven't been offered one, its worth asking/requesting one in my opinion. Haven't got my date through yet, but hopefull should soon.

I also wanted to comment on the pains in the stomach, I had these last time I was pregnant also, some cramps are apparently normal, I often got and am getting them this time a sort of stretching pain when I get up quickly etc, this is quite normal to. Most of these things I think we just notice when we know we are pregnant, they probably occured before you probably just ignored them unless they got too bad!!

Hi to everybody due in October,
i found out 3 weeks ago i was pregnant, with my first baby, am totally over the moon and am guessing i'm about 6 weeks but not really sure. I stopped taking the pill last Nov and haven't had a proper pill-free period since, so must have caught the first ovulation straight away, which quite amazed me really. I took 3 preg tests which were all strong positives, and also have been feeling symptoms such as tiredness, nausea, sore breasts and nipples. Also completely gone off some foods and having different cravings every day, it's really strange! Also noticed the heightened sense of smell, i agree, not always a bonus that!
It's really great to read about everybody elses experiences and recognise yourself in it, esp. as we haven't told anyone else either except parents and best friend. Also really good to read from women who've had babies before like Mandy and can share some experiences, i was actually quite worried about those weird stretching pains in my abdomen occasionally, and it has really set my mind at rest!

Anyway am now waiting for the midwife to get in touch, and for my dating scan so that should give me some more idea about how far i really am, and also reassure me that i really am pregnant. I do feel pg, and hubby tells me not to be silly doubting it, but it just still feels so overwhelming and surreal a lot of the time, i just want to be told it's really true and see the baby, the tiny bean! It must be such an amazing experience and i just can't wait!

Congratulations Mandy and Anita!

Can I ask something really personal? Has anyone also been getting a slight brown discharge?? only I am, I have just got a letter from the doctor so that I can go for a private scan, but am soo scared, this was the only thing I got when I have the miscarriage last year. I also had some discharge last week, the doctor sent me for an early scan and the baby was fine, I know I am probably just freaking out. Help. If anyone else has has something similar, please let me know.

Sorry to be a bit personal.

Have super weekends.
xxxxxxxx

Good Morning to everyone and hope we all had fab weekends. Welcome too Anika and Mandy.

Well I had a great time in Amsterdam but was very very tired and feeling quite nauseous a lot of the time but I think a lot of this was also because we went by boat.

I came home to a nice letter too and that confirms my scan date as being 8th March when I think I'll be 9+4weeks. Although Mandy you've put my mind at rest about the pains I'll still be glad to go for the earlier than usual scan which my doctor has requested. Like you Anika I think it will only be then that both me and my fiance will believe it for real.

((Al)) think that's how I give you a hug on here. I've not had any discharge as such myself so I can't really help I'm sure when you go for the private scan though everything will get sorted. I know it must be really stressing for you though having already had your m/c all I can say is try not to worry too much and I'm hear if you want to talk. Do you have a date yet for this private scan? xx
