ok if he's on metformin as well then he's not purely on diet control, the medication is doing some work for him. is he on 500mg or 850mg? sole source is definitly NOT right for him either way, he must be on something in the region of 1000+ and his medication needs to be extremely closely monitored, as he could end up taking too much medicine if his usual diet has suddenly changed. he's gona need to do his home blood tests more frequently. if he doesn't have his breads and rice it's ok, there are other foods that can make up for them. and also, always keep a packet of glucose sweets on him, it's always difficult to know when and how his glucose levels can drop.
i'd always say though, that if anyone has diabetes they should take too much care, not sure if this diet is right for him, go on something like weight watchers or just cut down on sweet and high calorie foods. it'll be safer for him.

Just checking Bean and it says that the choice should be down to GP so would strongly recommend he takes the literature and goes and has a good chat with the doc.

well of course, after all there is a VLCD plan for diabetics, but keep in mind that if the doctor is not willing to support him then how would he get his compulsory regular checks done? GP being good or bad, it's him at the end of the day that would get the hard end of it. and everybody is different, he could need the extra bit more or extra bit less. i think alongside the doctor, if your practice has a nurse who runs a diabetes clinic you should have a weekly appointment with her too, keep it as safe as you can at least in the first month.
dont take me wrong though, i'm not trying to go against the idea, i just worry for those who are diabetic, i've had enough examples around me ...
